advice needed genrator's

right looking to buy a genrator for the osf camper

 

the power thing is all muble juble to me so need some help on this.

 

what i want it do

elec heater,2xelec leight's,tv-dvd portable,and poss the fridge and may-be a socket for cd player

 

can any-one help me out with what sort i will need roughly please so i can go buy one,if i go to the shop and give him my list of what i want to run they will probley try and sell me the biggest one they have and i would'nt have a clue

If you are going to use an electric heater this will govern the size of your genny as heaters are a big load (up to 3 kw). Genny prices shoot up above 1.5kw as well (and are noiser as well). I would not have thought a camper size fridge was more than 500W (0.5kw) lights depend on bulb size but no more than 200W portable telly 200W at most. So i would suggest you bought a 1.5kw (the continuous rating will be about 1.3kw) and a gas heater. If you go all electric you will need a 3kw (2.7kw) and that will cost a lot to buy and run (we use 3kw ones at work and they use about a gallon every 4 hours at full load). Oh yeah pikeys love generators.

But the KVA bit confused me, how does this compare to output in watts ??

Have you thought about using 12Volt equipment with a solar panel and a diesel or gas fired heater?

 

Generators are damned unpopular on campsites and unless you had it on a very long lead would keep you awake too. If you have it on a long lead it'll keep someone else awake and they'll get up and switch it off then a row will ensue.

 

edit: To convert kVA (Kilo Volt Amps) to Kilo watt multiply the kVA figure by the power factor, using a typical 0.8 PF that 2.3kVA generator is 2Kw (so pretty small)

point taken vista, i don't know about lee but my usage is more remote, unpopulated locations, day time only (they tend to get nicked or run out over night). i just wanted an informed view on that genny.

anouther daft question it say's 230 volt i thought carvan's ect were 240 volt has you can plug straight in to the electric at home,

It's cheap because it's tiny mate, I've just checked my kettle and the element in that is 3Kw this generator only puts out 2Kw so enough for some lights and maybe a TV but nothing that needs any real current.

Damn vista you got some sort of industrial kettle, it says it will do fo heaters, drills, etc. I know it wont do everything at once but surely it will take a fair whack. I just cant afford a 3-4 KW genny.

No just a regular little kettle, I'll bet if you check your own kettle it'll be similar.

 

It's a 230volt single phase generator so the same voltage that you get from your plug at home, but it's very small.

Lee that's cheap rubbish and wont last 2 minutes and blow all your gear up, you want something like this:

He also does a 1000tl which is a bit cheaper won't run so much but still very good.

 

I have one for my Caravan and it's spot on quiet reliable and if you have the sinewave one you can run a laptop/ pc without surges (which blow them up).

 

I bought from this guy a mate of my brother-in-law and he's a really nice bloke who has a big warehouse of all this stuff ............check out his other items ........ all that he list's he has in stock.

Do you have a big lesure battery that should runs fridge and lights? (don't know what they did about batterys on the older vans). If you dont you should get one to run the fridge at night just to keep the food and beer cool . Also what is very handy is a AC adapter which plugs into the cigy lighter converts 12 volts to 240v. you wont be able to run all this kit on a AC adapter.

 

We have a built in genny on our van and its just a push start don't know how much this will cost as we got it with the van.

an 850horse power engine or generator? Typically the engine will be measured in horsepower but the generator will always be Kilowatts or kVA. 850 horse power is equivalent to 634Kw so is pretty large, at that size it may also be a three phase generator, do you have a link?

I know it's a few quid but i borrowed 2 other generators like the ones Lee has seen both blew up my Caravan electrics and items we were using !!!

You may get away with it but i wanted something that was reliable !!!

 

The 100tl is cheaper of around £200 and would do the job ?

lee, i like the ook of the second one but it only has industtrial output sockets, not household three pin jobbies

They are safer to use outside you get a conversion back to the normal 3 pin socket.
