Whats the best software for making websites nowdays???

I learned how to use the Macromedia packages back in school for A Level.. but I was wondering if there was anything better??

And what is the best "language" to use now.. PHP, HTML or something else??

Any advice appreciated!!!

Cheers

If you want to make your website interactive, then php is the one to go for. Download xampp. It will install apache server, php and mysql onto your pc and turn it into a server so you can develop your site offline.

Then, go to http://codeigniter.com/ and install that. It's a PHP framework that does all the hard work for you. It's a doddle to learn.

Learn CSS too, that way you can create sites using DIVs rather than tables, and you can switch designs easier.

Don't bother with dreamweaver or anything like that. All you need is notepad

What sort of site are you wanting to design?

I need to design a site much like this, a community site for a uni organisation/ club... I have to do it for some coursework..

So if I use PHP then I could create an interactive site.. few clicky flashy things.. maybe a newsboard style thing.. and something where people can post info etc..

All sounds like a huge amount of work to me!!!!

Download Joomla (it's free - www.joomla.org). It's a ready made news site with different templates. There are loads of plugins (like Community Builder and forums) that will let you achieve what you want.

Here's the website I'm currently doing for my mates gearbox company. It's not yet live. http://www.expressgearboxrepairs.com/gearboxes

That's based on joomla.
