antz Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 who can give me some pointers about taking the engine out of my escort tomorow? Where would be best to strap it up and lift it from? How do i get off the stubborn bolts on the gearbox bellhousing ... any advice you can give on anything!

FlashCadillac Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 stubbern bolts.... WD40 and keep trying.... tommy bar/torque rench depending on how accessable they are... you keep trying, even hit them with a hammer... might break the rust seal and it will deffinatley make you feel better loads of ways to lift the engine, if its a cast exhaust manifold and the inlet manifold has gaps in the casting between cylinder 1-2 and 3-4 then straps through the gaps and the exhaust manifold will do if not take the inlet and outlet off first... you can get plates that bolt over the ports that have 'O's on them to get a hook through or if neither like me the other day taking a xflow out of my mates cortina, take the inlet and exhaust manifold off.... throw the most rear and from bolts back in on both sides and throw a lifting strap under them.... just dont rag it around or the staps might slide off the bolts
antz Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 i didnt get the lifting straps with my engine hoist of f**k! i was told to rope it round the engien mounts but i think that might be in the way
lee_capri Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 ive got a engine hoist ,go rent one for the week end last one i rented was £20 for the weekend but that's a few year's back, and take the box out at the same time we do them all that way take the box with the engine less bolt's and less f**king about trying to get it in and out
lee_capri Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 i didnt get the lifting straps with my engine hoist of f**k! i was told to rope it round the engien mounts but i think that might be in the way you can use any-thing rope seat belt ect ect dont have to be proper strap's
60ftman Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 I took the engine out of mine doing an 8500rpm rolling burnout........... .......But I didn't mean to!
antz Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 cheers lee! why do i take the box out too? I was just gonna leave the box in. less to take out
FlashCadillac Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 lee is right... it is a pain trying to mate the engine with the box on the way back in but i can be done with a bit of determination rope is fine mate.... only problem with useing the engine mounts is that they are a little low down... can be a little top heavy, more stable if you grab it from the top you will soon to strap to as you need the engine to come out level really as you will need to manover it around things in the engine bay
antz Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 well what would you all suggest i use to lift it with? engine mounts too low and thats all i can really think of what did you use flashman?
emu Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Either put the rope around your manifolds or around the engine mounts, they'll be fine. They hold the engine the rest of the time dont they?? I used to lift mine out like that all the time. One person on each strut top and lift it out. If you take the box off the back it does mean you have less metal swinging around in the engine bay trying to catch your paint
antz Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 Undo the four bolts holding the crossmember to the body. The six holding the struts to the inner wings and the gearbox crossmember and lift the body off the engine. Its suprisingly light without the front end mechanicals in it. Or put your tow rope around the engine mounts that sounds complicated!!! i dont like the sound of that plus i hired the engine hoist already
FlashCadillac Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 i used the front and rear bolts that holt the inlet and outlet manifold on, i used the straps that they deliver the copper with at work, have used ropes, chains.... anything that will suppost the weight

bigglesmk2 Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 What he said, leave geabox on and take it all out in one lump and put it back in the same way, bolt your new engine up to your gearbox while its out of the car. You'll need some head room tho,do it outside the garage,or or raise the car up and drop every thing out of the bottom, thats how i did mine really easy. Shame we didnt live closer i got all the lifting gear and tools to help ya do it.
lee_capri Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 the way i do them rope carb manerfold and the exeust manerfold work's for me,leave's your engine mount's free, and allow's you to tip the engine back has well to allow it to come out, i do all engine's this way tranny di's,cappa's ect ect because it allow's you to be able ot move the engine about, if i was doing your escort id take the engine and box in one,it's a lot easer to put the box on the engine then what it is to put the engine on the box while it is fitted to the car
antz Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 ah so the manifold bolts....hmmm good diea flash. i dont really wanna take the box out with it. seems a right bastard
FlashCadillac Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 ah so the manifold bolts....hmmm good diea flash. i dont really wanna take the box out with it. seems a right bastard you'll eat your words when you try and get the engine to mate with the gearbox when the new one is going in
antz Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 emu i like your new train of thought i neevr taken a gearbox out either and it seems easier in mind to leave teh box where it is
lee_capri Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 antz im takeing my v8 out this weekend and takeing the box with the engine like i said it's easer that way,has it can some time's take hr's to get the engine back on the box in the car
antz Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 ah so the manifold bolts....hmmm good diea flash. i dont really wanna take the box out with it. seems a right bastard you'll eat your words when you try and get the engine to mate with the gearbox when the new one is going in msot likely flash but at the moment i wanna get teh thing out. then i can remove the box at a later date
antz Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 i understand your point lee but how do i get the engine AND box out through the engine bay? thats my problem. i dont mind getting the engine out by itself then getting the box out at a later date. gives me something to play with my main aim at the moment is to empty the bay
FlashCadillac Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 yeah but you cant get the box out and leave the engine in the car you will see how far forward you have to move the engine before its seperate from the box... its a good 3 inch if the box is coming out at some point, do it now or you will have to take the engine out.... AGAIN
