mk2escortmad Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 on my mk2 capri i have found where oil is leaking from, it looks like its coming from the temp sensor. when i start the engine it just drips out making a lovely mess on the drive... is this a major problem, anything blown?? is it an easy fix? any help will be appreciated cheeRS
MK2Ed Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Is the temp sender an aftermarket threaded type that you screw in? If so you might be able to wrap with PTFE plumbers tape or gain a sender with a longer thread or block off completely and do away with oil temp gauge...
mk2escortmad Posted April 15, 2008 Author Report Posted April 15, 2008 it looks like a standard one tbh...i will try tightening it but it bloody awkward lol
mk2escortmad Posted April 15, 2008 Author Report Posted April 15, 2008 i think i may have to use it, or get another sender, i just tried tightning it at its tight, i used mole grips to try it
Admin Vista Posted April 15, 2008 Admin Report Posted April 15, 2008 I don't recall capris having an oil temperature gauge, do you mean the pressure sender Kyle?
mk2escortmad Posted April 15, 2008 Author Report Posted April 15, 2008 tbh i dont know lol, i know it has got a wire going to it and is leaking oil thats why i thought it was a temp sensor
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Yeah Vista is right, it sounds like your Oil Pressure Sender. These are on a tapered thread, so I wouldn't go to mad tightening it mate incase it shears off. Also being a tapered thread, it shouldn't need PTFE tape on it. I do know that some senders like to spring leaks. I have a mate with a V8 Range Rover, he has gone through 6 senders in a month or so Pop down to your motor factors and get a new one... only about 6 quid. Don't use mole grips tightening it, use a spanner, then when it's tight it should be sealed
mk2escortmad Posted April 15, 2008 Author Report Posted April 15, 2008 cheeRS jimbob, do you happen to know what size spanner i would need?? will i need to drain oil fisrt before fitting it? cheeRS
capriaddict Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Can you get a pic of it and post it up as that would help us to know exactly where you mean
spooner Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 if it's the sender behind the dizzy........thats the water temp sender,u'll get no oil from there,if it is wet there then it's prob the rocker gasket. the oil sender is just above the starter,if it's leaking there, pull the wire off, undo it with a 24mm socket (think thats the right size) thow it across the yard and fit a new one (about a £5.00-10.00). do not try to screw it all the way in,just till it feels tight.a bit of ptfe tape is not a bad thing but not really needed.
mk2escortmad Posted April 15, 2008 Author Report Posted April 15, 2008 cheeRS spooner, its on the passenger side of the engine near the dipstick...thats where the oil is coming from...will i have to drain the oil ( whats left of it lol ) to fit the new one??
Alan G Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 cheeRS spooner, its on the passenger side of the engine near the dipstick...thats where the oil is coming from...will i have to drain the oil ( whats left of it lol ) to fit the new one?? You shouldn't have to mate!!
mk2escortmad Posted April 15, 2008 Author Report Posted April 15, 2008 thats good, mind you it looks like it only leaks when the engine is running so its prob pressure fed
spooner Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 no need to mate, you might get a little dribble but thats it
mk2escortmad Posted April 15, 2008 Author Report Posted April 15, 2008 ideal guys cheeRS for the help wonder what im doing tomorrow
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 cheeRS jimbob, do you happen to know what size spanner i would need??will i need to drain oil fisrt before fitting it? cheeRS Hi mate, sorry I missed your question. I don't know the exact size as it's been a while since I played with a Pinto, but what I can tell you is that it will be a BSP tapered thread, so it will be an imperial spanner size. Should be either 1/2 inch or 9/16th from memory Oh and as the others have said, no need to drain the oil first
mk2escortmad Posted April 16, 2008 Author Report Posted April 16, 2008 cheeRS jimbob, i try and find a big enough spanner lol
