spa special Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 my other half drives a mk1 3000gt in the past it has always started first. but lately it will not start when hot. if i wait 10 to 15 mins it starts fine again. i have checked the timing, points, co reading, coil and condenser. if anyone has got any ideas i would be very greatfull as the other half is starting to lose heart with the car. cheers wayne
mk3cokebottle Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 i would start with changing the petrol filter mate first as with most old fords if the petrol filter is a bit mucky then the fuel that has reached the carb when it was turned off would have evaporated in the carb from the heat , its happened to me a couple of times with different cars one of them being a mk3 corty that coughed spluttered and all sorts when she got hot and changed every thing in an illimination to find the prob then the wise ol man told me to do the filter and she was perfect...... hope this helps mate let me know if it was
BIGKEV Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 Swear lots , Kick it, Swear some more then change the rubber mats and the air freshener, cant help much more than that

Take off the air filter and look down the primary barrel. See the tube that goes down the middle that's held in place by a bar that goes across the top? If you can wiggle that, it's knackered and what's happening is that the fuel that should be going into the middle of that tube is just running down the sides of the barrel as the tube is supposed to be a tight fit and the fuel runs through the bit at the top of the tube which holds it in place.

You can take them out and tap the flat square bit that holds it in place with a hammer to spread it out which will make it a tight fit again and bodge it for a while.
spa special Posted April 29, 2008 Author Report Posted April 29, 2008 thanks for all of your replys. i removed the fuel pump and carb fillers and removed a fair bit of crap from the fillers this has helped alot. the car will now start when hot but takes a long time to start. if anyone has got any more ideas i would be very greatfull. p.s the car is fitted with a 38 dgas carb cheers wayne
KEVSWAYV6 Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Hi Wayne, Sorry to hear your having probs with starting the MK1 3.0. Sounds like the fuel is evaporating in the carb when left standing hot. Might be worth trying a new fuel pump, if your present pump is only pushing it through at a reduced rate, could explain why it takes a long time to fire up. Also, are you sure the timing is spot on? You could give Southern Carbs a phone, 02085402723. www.southerncarbs.co.uk they might be able to help. They are Webber specialists.
Beakster Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 I've seen this problem with a 32/36DGAV. Drove fine but turn it off when its warm then try and restart and it just turns over and wont fire up. Cleaning out the carb and rebuilding with a carb rebuild kit sorted it.

What he said^^^^^^^^ get yourself a service kit for the carb and also check that the auto choke isn't sticking open
bigglesmk2 Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Had this exact same prob with a 1.6 ls mk3 cappa about 5 years ago.A327 VOC,was a right old nakker so i flogged it for scrap. Never did find out what was wrong with it
crapichris Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 give the carb a service. Then get yourself down the breakers and find some of that silver tubing that they use to deflect the heat around the cabling on Granadas, sierras, Mondegos (and many other cars I suspect). Thread that over your fuel pipes and it will help keep fuel evaporation to a minimum. I use it on the Mk1 and it works a treat in the hot weather..
spa special Posted April 30, 2008 Author Report Posted April 30, 2008 cheers guys. i will try out your suggestions over the weekend. im sure with the ideas you have given me i will sort the prob. i will let you know how i get on. thanks again wayne
Beakster Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 If you rebuild the carb you need something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WEBER-38-DGAS-CARBURETTOR-SERVICE-KIT-ORIGINAL_W0QQitemZ130202516190QQihZ003QQcategoryZ122139QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem And there are some really good instructions (for a 23/36 but 38 is basically the same) on the procedure here: http://fordcaprilaser.co.uk/carburettor_overhaul.htm Good Luck
