Side drafts........

because when i have one laying around the carage i pick it up and hold it up like a pair of binoculars...

"i see no ships.... i see no ships"

Down drafts are no good for that at all.

I'm a layman when it comes to carbs and engines as I don't know the finer points of X widget is better than Y widget for peak power but Z widget will give better torque across the rev range.

So here's my laymans assessment.

I would guess that side draughts would give better air flow into the head with less turbulence as they don't need to turn the air through 90 degrees to achieve it.

Down draughts are rarer and often fetch more money when they come up as they were an original fit group 1 (I think) option from new and some people like the originality thing, they're also easier to fit filters on the end of than down draughts in the confines of an escort engine bay.
