antz Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 how can you tell if a car has the original paint on it from when it left the factory? As far as i knew my car has only ever had the front wings and both rear quarters sprayed but when a guy came to do some dent repair on t todya he refused to do it cso the whole car has apparently been sprayed and it will crack the paint if he tries to remove them so ims till stuck with 4 dents which piss me off
Stu_B Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 Are you sure it's not just from the work you've had done? He may have spotte dsomething and presumed it was the whole car sprayed?
antz Posted August 1, 2008 Author Report Posted August 1, 2008 Are you sure it's not just from the work you've had done? He may have spotte dsomething and presumed it was the whole car sprayed? he took me round the whole car and told me every panel had been sprayed cos its not the ford style of finish. i told him it had never been sprayed as far as i knew but according to him..it has
MightySprocket Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 theres every chance it had paint though at some point in its long life... but why will it crack? surely whether its had a respray or not theres that risk. Fords original paint wasnt died into the metal
antz Posted August 1, 2008 Author Report Posted August 1, 2008 surely not every panel on the whole car!!! in 25years and 45k miles i do seriously doubt its had a full exterior respray
MightySprocket Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 surely not every panel on the whole car!!! in 25years and 45k miles i do seriously doubt its had a full exterior respray it might have, low miles or not a colour like yours that contains elements of red will age badly especially if its not been kept inside for those 25 years
Rick Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 was he a chips away type man or a proper sprayer? the chips away men like easy jobs like new cars with flimsy panels where they can just push out the dents or do that liquid nitrogen trick. fords were made with proper steel though and hed have to mess with it a lot more and probably end up filling, repainting etc etc and i bet thats not an easy colour to match being so old. he prob just made somet up to save face but in reality he couldnt do the job in half hour like hed hoped to
Retro-gone. Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 if its pete from Brid he knows his stuff, i used to work with him and he could smell a respray at 500 yards , my capri has had 2 full resprays in 46000 miles, red pigments are terrible for fading so theres a good chance its been repainted for cosmetic purposes.
antz Posted August 1, 2008 Author Report Posted August 1, 2008 it wasnt that guy tony. it was specialist dents from pickering. i know what you mean about red fading but as far as i can tell its all the original colour and was always garaged from new
FredTransit Posted August 1, 2008 Report Posted August 1, 2008 Yep, like Rick said he thought it was going to be a half hour job and when he found he would have to actually do some work got cold feet!
antz Posted August 1, 2008 Author Report Posted August 1, 2008 he did an mx5 in 10mins. wouldnt do mine though cos i had 4 dents and wanted my £35 worth! it was £35 per car but wuldnt do my car and he prob thought it wasnt worth £35
Rick Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 there you have it.... getting rid of even small dents properly takes hours of work building and blocking the area i wouldnt let him anywhere near my car
antz Posted August 2, 2008 Author Report Posted August 2, 2008 hink i might just get some work done this winter insetad. i need my front wing spraying, new rear wheel arch at least...but if i do that i always think WHY DONT I JUST DO THE WHOLE CAR...then remember the quote i was given for a full exterior respray alone
emu Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 is he one of the paintless dent people? might be worth speaking to try one of them if not because it shouldnt matter what the paint is.
Retro-gone. Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 Antz, ring my mate pete, arrange for him to come to my house to have a look at your car, if he tells you same thing then you know where you are, he wont p!ss you about, he enjoys his work, he removed 3 dints from my bike tank , it took him 2 hours and he wouldnt quit till it was sorted, he also did my capri 10 years ago.
