Retro-gone. Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 fookin pissed off, got all short block rebuilt, come to fit cork sump gasket, tightened it up and the bastard thing broke up and squeezed out, i followed the manuals instructions by lining the block with silicone sealer and again on top othe gasket, have i tightened it up too much, should i have fitted it dry, or is it a crap gasket?
countrybumpkin Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 i have always used hermetite to glue the gasket to the sump and grease it to the block so it can be reused if you take the sump off and never had any problems, you need to tighten the sump up like a head opposite corners
Retro-gone. Posted September 1, 2008 Author Report Posted September 1, 2008 i think i gave it too much welly to be honest, proper pissed off.
Supercharged Nat Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 the dont have to be super tight, just enough to compress the spring washers and nip the sump- other wise like youhave just found out the cork gives out and buggers up.
Mr Sam Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 make sure your doing it up as you would head bolts, with a torque wrench and working on opposite nuts and only tighten a little at a time even then i part fooked mine, yet to discover if it leaks
Retro-gone. Posted September 1, 2008 Author Report Posted September 1, 2008 thanks lads, just ordered a new one
abarth78 Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 use only a tiny amount of sealer and don`t over tighten mate... just watch out for the gasket from the side of the block while tightening... if your overdoing it it will start to pop out slowly so take care
Retro-gone. Posted September 1, 2008 Author Report Posted September 1, 2008 now you tell me, couldnt you have pm'd me before i started it
Tom Posted September 3, 2008 Report Posted September 3, 2008 you don't need any sealant on cork gaskets mate, all i use is a bit of spray glue. just put a tiny amount of silicone on the ends of the rubber bits
Retro-gone. Posted September 3, 2008 Author Report Posted September 3, 2008 ok thanks, its just that i followed manuals instructions and it clearly says 'run a bead of silicone all around the gasket and block, circling the bolt holes, i realise now i put waaay too much on and i defo overtightened it.
