baz105e Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 most motorfactors stock welding metal. just practice a bit first. but its trial and error antz . the best way to learn is to get stuck in
garyv6100e Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Look for some fabricator's on a near by industrial estate get yourself some 20 or 18 gauge mild steel (they will now what that means) (no thicker than 1.5 mm) from their scrap bin bung em some drink money go home and start practicing

antz Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Posted September 18, 2008 you're not the only one who's car needs welding least the rot is ready cut out fo yours! mine still sat there making a nice nest and multiplying like fruit fly lava on an old banana next winter is gonna be the big strip down i think. im starting to save now and providing my insurance doesnt bu me too much and my engine doesnt cost the earth i might JUST make enough cash. there oes my money for ever moving away from home
mk2dk Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 I'm not a worldchampion, but I can give a little advice. I never cut/remove anything from the car, before I have the new panel adjusted to fit. In that way you never cut a bigger hole than the new part actually can cover. It's easyest to weld the pieces together if they overlap eachother a little ex 2 mm. It has to be bare metal, and cut out so much that the metal are fresh, as it's impossible to weld in rust. Good luck
Yeomans22 Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 antz, ive got the inner wheel well reapir panel its got a bit cut out of it, u can have it, too use if u want it, Paul.
Wessie Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 remember welding brand new fresh metal is alot easier then welding crappy metal to a cheap repair panel !
Mr Sam Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 come teach yourself on my anglia although theres not alot else todo on it
Trevmk3 Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 get some old panels from a scrappy and practice welding on them, you dont need to practice on a full car , i would be able to bring you some steel up to scotch corner in october if thats any help as we always have loads kicking about at work
antz Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Posted September 18, 2008 i may take you up on that trev if i can make it! i need the car back on the road now so i may just buy a full replacement panel and get it welded in by my local bodyshop
petrolhead Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Mine was like that Antz. Bite the bullet and get yourself a MIG welder as has been said. I got a 130T and it paid for itself with the first job I did. No training needed, just get metal sheet (loads on ebay) and a book and practice and practice. PM me when you buy one and I'll give you my number and give you a few tips. If you can get just 10mins with someone who can MIG weld you'll learn loads! Chin Up, that corrosion really isn't that bad
