CapperTom Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Hi all, Im at my wits end now, been in garage all day getting car ready to start and will it balls. ive got fuel at the reg and out the reg, The plugs are firing and the engine turns over fine, ive tried turning the distributor slowly either way and it just slows the engine down to a stop. the carbs have been rebuilt and plugs 1+2 seemto be dry and 3+4 wet although there is petrol coming out of the filter side of the carbs on 3+4 cylinder. Ant ideas anyone? carbs screws, regulator of anythink? All help really appreciated Tom
Rick Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 are your coil wires all in good nick and not shorting on anything
CapperTom Posted January 11, 2009 Author Report Posted January 11, 2009 Yeah, ive replaced most of them as ive fitted a burton distributor, replaced the previous ones with crimp on o connectors and the same on wires from dizzy and bolted them to the coil. It has a spark, would it not spark if somethink wrong there? Tom
Rick Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 it seems unusual that everything is there and still wont crack up. those symptoms sound like when i havent switched my cutoff switch on. and thats a switch in the wire i fitted between the dizzy and the coil. i think its the negative
livewire7116 Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 If your getting 2 wet plugs and 2 dry could it be the carb not opening up properly, check your balance screw. have you had tappets off and set them properly?, Go back to basics and start from scratch
Conor Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Yeah, ive replaced most of them as ive fitted a burton distributor, replaced the previous ones with crimp on o connectors and the same on wires from dizzy and bolted them to the coil. If so, I think you'll find that it's about 6 volts short. As a quick "test to see if it's that", run a wire from the +ve terminal on the battery to the +ve terminal on the coil. Won't harm for a few minutes.
CapperTom Posted January 11, 2009 Author Report Posted January 11, 2009 Yeah im using the +side of coil, but pretty sure i took ballast resistor out as i go 12v from it when testing, ive got the ignition live from wiring loom bolted onto + side of coil using a crimp o terminal and the the + side of dizzy wire bolted on the same side of coil using same way, is this right? Tom
CapperTom Posted January 12, 2009 Author Report Posted January 12, 2009 What the distributor timing? With this i got it on top dead center mark of bottom pulley with the cam half way between inlet closing and exhaust opening, is this right or shud it be inlet literally just closed then line the rotor arm up with the notch in dizzy and slide it in? Tom
MG-Ford Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Sounds like the timing is off, or the firing order?

CapperTom Posted January 12, 2009 Author Report Posted January 12, 2009 It has an adjustable pulley on the cam? Tom
over_head_cam Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 IIRC the woodruf key slot on the Vernier pulley is at the bottom when the Cam is in the right position for setting up the belt with the crank at TDC. I'm almost positive if it's a Kent pulley, that the writing will be up the right way Please don't take this ast 100% accurate, so I would see if anyone else agress (I haven't got one in front of me to check
RS2kSX Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 as a wild card try the dissy cap 180 deg and see, i got mine spitting through the carbs on the first go...
