i know its not OSF but i could use a bit of help...

i got a Y plate (2001) Escort van, 1.8 ENDURA DE (non turbo).

all is fine until i leave it ticking over in traffic then the engine sort of judders and the temp gauge decides to randomly flicker around in the top half of the gauge. if i rev the engine fairly hard it will sort it for a couple of mins and then the problem comes back..

sorry its off topic but just need a couple of opinions

thanks

It could be your engine fan kicking in... possibly.

I have a 2000 Escort Estate with the Endura Turbo Diesel engine, and that does feel a bit rough when the fan kicks in. As for your temp gauge, mine sometimes goes off on one every now and again, especially when it's on it's way to the 3 quarter mark. The fuel gauge isn't anything to shout about either

Next time it does it, pull over and check to see if the fan is on

seconded, the drain in power from the fans on the rads in them is silly!!!

and it would alter the temp guage because of the lack of current if the alternator isnt playing game 100%

(my old car used to drop under 10v when the leccy fan cut in!!!!!

played havoc with the lights and dials lol

but also, when revved it'd sort itsself out with a bit of extra charge and be fine a few mins later...

(makes sence eh?) :)

cheers peeps, does sound like it makes sense.

the temp gauge goes up and down too fast for it to actually be changing temp like that i think, unless the stat is letting a bit of absolutely boiling water thru every now and again, but it wouldnt make the engine almost cut out i dont think...

i will stick a little temp bypass wire in the fan switch plug and watch the temp gauge see what happens.

thanks for your help

When it judders do the revs drop right down ?

well all of a sudden i get one jolt, the revs dont really drop but it just goes all lumpy, only happens on tick over and the gauge goes weird at same time.

its a fairly new battery aswell, new fan belt and i tested alternator earlier and its kicking out 14.7volts, hits 15volts if i rev it.

i havent heard the fan come on atall, im thinking it may be a ceased fan, it tries to cut in but cant spin the motor so its even more drain than normal. doesnt overheat tho highest it goes it just over the middle and thats when it happens, when the fan is supposed to come on i guess!
