countrybumpkin Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 right well as some of you know i bought a 2.8i capri a few weeks ago, well now its home and i started really looking at it oh dear, starting from the front it needs welding to the inner wings, strut tops, wing rails, a post repair, bottom of the windscreen, inner and outer sills, pasanger arch, lower quaters, rear valence, boot floor and rear chassis rail plus other bits i havent prodded it also will need a windscreen as it had a chip and then cracked coming out. so now i dont know what to do with it as although i can do the welding i'm worried as to what i might find once i prod a bit more as i've already found bits pop rivited on and filled over and i dont really have the money to spend on it. so although i already love it i'm seriously considering breaking it for parts, so what does everyone else think is it worth doing up or breaking?
OldskoolSue Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 Do it up and use it you wont regret it
Conor Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 Find a cheap 1.6 Laser, do the strengthening and swap the mechanicals over. Once the A post and rear chassis legs go, unless you want to sink a shedload of time and money into it, it's not worth it. By the sounds of it, basically every structural panel has holes in. There's some solid Laser shells out there with just the usual rear arches and front wings but with everything else intact. You'd be better off doing that I think.

Conor Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 yeah see that sounds like a sensable segestion, as there has also been loads of welding already done but its to a very poor standard and the rust under hasnt been cut away and i dont have the spare cash to put into buying loads of panels , paint etc or really the time to spend welding it I think that's the deciding factor. If you've a garage, a roll over jig and are happy to just do a bit now and again over a couple of years, then it's maybe worth a punt at doing it for the "I've done that" factor. It'll still cost you an arm and a leg but over a longer period so a bit easier to bear. I think if it was something special like a Brookie or a limited number of them were made then it's worth considering but for a normal run of the mill V6, it's cheaper and easier to do a reshell.
