sambo Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 Heyoop, i had my cam cover machined recently and i really like how it looks. I dont want to paint it but as it has a slightly rough finish it will need protection. Can i use just clear laquer from halfrauds? or will it get too hot and flake or go yellow or something? Any ideas people?
Mrs O/H/C Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 i think you will find it will go yellow due to the heat
Retro-gone. Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 not nesecerely , neceserely , nesacerely (how the fook do you spell it ) any way it depends on the metal.
sambo Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 It's alloy. Cosworth yb one. I cant think of anyhing worse than it going yellow!!!
Admin Vista Posted March 28, 2009 Admin Report Posted March 28, 2009 If it's alloy it will tarnish and go dull if left untreated (much like an unlaquered alloy wheel rim that doesn't get polished). So you can polish it regularly to keep it shiny and bright, or paint / laquer it. Not sure how laquer will stand up to under bonnet heat though.
Mk 1 Mark Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 I had the one on my Magenta sapphire paint the same colour and had a few layers of paint on it, polished it and it looked mint
baz105e Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 engine laquer allways looks shite after a while, garenteed to go yellow and flakey, i wonder if there is such thing as clear powder coat ???
deluxemk1 Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 two pack laquer is what you need on it it will resist the temperatures ok. Just think how hoy your car roof gets in the summer, you can fry an egg on it it will be fine ive painted lots of engine blocks etc in two pack paint. mask out the cosworth letters etc then etch prime the rest . Get a upol acid 8 etch primer aerosol from halfords and a colour of your choice in rattle can. Paint it up ,remove lettering that you masked out then get a local body shop to two pack laquer it for you. You may run a slight risk the laquer will lift on the polished up letters in time but you will prob get away with it. Or of course prime ,paint and laquer then demask it and polish the letters on it ,but that will mean regular polishing on the letters to keep nice. Hope that helps
