Daveyboy20 Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 What sort of 0-60 times would this combination get in a mk5 cortina? I can imagine it being pretty rapid as i put a 2.0 on 1.6 diff/axel in the capri and it was quick but that had a 5 speed. Will it accelerate faster than one with a 5 speed? Im thinking of whackin in a 30k 2.0 pinto i know of one weekend this xmas and want some inspiration! PS look at this pic of my cortina that fla knocked up for me in the photoshop room!
MightySprocket Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 that looks awesome mate! want one
mk2_boy Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 not sure of times but rapido to about 60
Daveyboy20 Posted December 13, 2006 Author Report Posted December 13, 2006 that looks awesome mate! want one Looks ace! Im gonna do the grille like that asap. not sure of times but rapido to about 60 yeah it should be pretty quick off the mark, i was just wondering if it would be a big differnce between the 4 speed and the 5 speed bx. I want to get a 5 speed so its a bit better on fuel on the motorway but ive heard that the ratios are better on the 4 speed?
X-pack-Glyn Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 Mine runs a 205 block mated to a 1600 4 speed and 1600 3.75 diff, its far quicker on acceleration than any poxy 5 speed capri ive had. i kept the 2 litre flywheel as i could use the bigger 216mm clutch but with the 20 spline centre, this had to be an AP item as cortina ones are rare now. also ive had a recorded 128 top end (on a private test track ) which is faster than any of my big vee,s managed 5 speed or not, was screaming though
X-pack-Glyn Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 Also with regards to fuel economy mine was getting 32 ish to the gallon on long motorway runs (better than a well serviced standard 1600 5 speed laser my wife had), the 5 speed may drop the revs but i dont think it does a whole lot for economy as the engine has to work harder against a 5th gear than a 4th. and yes, 32 to the gallon with twin dcoe,s.... and its never been driven with economy as a priority. the only thing is that first gear is over pretty quickly, about 30 mph, second gear comes and goes pretty fast too. i dont need to change down when overtaking normally, an good A roads whack it in 4th and treat it like an auto.... the 4 speed and sixteen axle do make it very buzzy and its a right hoot to drive.
Daveyboy20 Posted December 13, 2006 Author Report Posted December 13, 2006 Ace! Cheers for the advice glyn i definately wanna do it now! Do you think it'd be ok using the 1.6 flywheel and clutch though?
X-pack-Glyn Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 You can do it easy mate using the 1.6 clutch, however you need to use the 1600 flywheel too. the clutches do work ok but really dont look up to the job of a good tuned pinto, personally i would stick with the 2 litre flywheel and order yourself an AP friction plate, 216mm is what you want with the 20 mm splines, £97 posted from burtons. there will also be a slim, very slim chance that the 4 speed is a rocket with the 23 spline shaft, if so the whole 5 speed clutch assembly bolts straight on.
petrolhead Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 To answer the original question. I reckon about 8.5 seconds, if it is a standard pinto. what ratio is a 1.6 axle? Is it 3.54:1 as in the Mk2 escorts? What wheel and tyre combo have you got?
Daveyboy20 Posted December 13, 2006 Author Report Posted December 13, 2006 Cheers guys hopefully the front end will look something like that soon! Im gonna do the engine swap some time in the next month, im gonna be off uni so ill have time to have the car off the road for a couple of days. On a bit of a tight budget so i cant really afford to get a performance clutch but the engine is gonna be pretty much standard part from exhaust and filter, do you reckon it'd hold on? Definately gonna do it Im gonna make myself a nice straight through exhuast too so it'll sound mean!
Daveyboy20 Posted December 13, 2006 Author Report Posted December 13, 2006 What wheel and tyre combo have you got? Not sure on the ratio but at the mo ive got standard cortina 13" ghias alloys and tyres.
petrolhead Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 That helps, small wheels make your effective gearing lower - so more acceleration but less top speed. Retro ford did a GPS based test of 4 spd vs 5 spd and the 4 speed box was half a second quicker to 60, and that wasn't even a RS box. That's why I'm sticking with my 4 speed. Standard RS2 is supposed to do 0-60 in 8 seconds so given the extra weight of a cortina I would have thought 8.5-9seconds for 0-60mph if the engine is in good tune. regards petrolhead matt
MadMark2 Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 Damn nice 'tina !!!! Wht would my mk2 escort get with a 2.0 pinto, 4spd and a back axle off a 1.3 auto ????? sorry if im nicking ya thread......
petrolhead Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 I'm guessing the 1.3 auto axle is a 3.9:1. So I would have thought sub 8sec if your pinto is producing good standard power.
johnboy Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 The type 9 is a waste of time unless you are doing A LOT of motorway driving. Stick with the 4 speed, they have better ratios, are sweeter shifting, & are cheaper.

Wht would my mk2 escort get with a 2.0 pinto, 4spd and a back axle off a 1.3 auto ????? sorry if im nicking ya thread...... I roughly timed my Mk2 at 8 secs with a good pinto EFI, 1.3 auto back axle, 185/60r13 tyres and a 5sp box (stop watch and GPS for speed). I think it would be faster with the 4 speed as 1st gear is too short on the 5speed meaning you have to change to 2nd too early and then need to go to 3rd at about 55mph (unless you really rev the engine hard!)
Daveyboy20 Posted December 14, 2006 Author Report Posted December 14, 2006 Damn nice 'tina !!!! PS nice car by the way! cheers fellas! Its not quite like that yet but won't be too long! Im gonna look into it this weekend see if i can do it before xmas maybe, we'll see! I'll obviously keep everyone updated!
