Badgerman85 Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 so yesterday i took the car to the garage to get the tappets done, the mechanics went all gun-ho and started fiddling with the carb's, now the car runs like a bag of sh*t, the tappets are getting louder by the minute and some strange knocking noise has appeared....oh and they ripped my drivers seat......i'm an angry angry man!!! im useless with setting up carbs, i can manage the tappets apart from a total lack of tools as they all got stolen out of our lockup, its just a massive joke now as im having to get lifts everywhere as the cars pretty much undriveable.
puddy Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 Did they charge you for any of this work, or was it 'mates' rates ? Why did you take it away if they cocked it up so much ? puddy Ps. why not give wayne a shout from wpe to sort it for ya ?
Conor Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I have a funny feeling the rough running and the tappets are linked. My mate thinks he knows about cars. He adjusted the tappets on his Pinto as he likes them silent and it started running rubbish after - stalling a lot and like it was running on 3 cylinders. He asked me if I could pop round with mine so he could pull bits off as he was convinced it was the ignition or carb. I went round and asked him if he'd done a compression test which he said he had and it was "in the green" which immediately got me worried as that means nothing but Gunsons insist on putting it on their gauges. Anyway, he fannied around for 2hrs so I eventually got him to do a compression test on my engine. Now bearing in mind mine is an ex-Transit low compression lump and his is a HC one, his read 130 per cylinder and mine read 185. Told him either the valve seats were shot or the clearances were out. After I'd gone home, he rang me to say he'd slackened them off and it was running great now. So...the rough running is probably down to overtightened tappets. Hopefully the knocking isn't a valve smacking into a piston because they've cocked it up. If it is, claim on their insurance for a new engine.
Badgerman85 Posted May 13, 2009 Author Report Posted May 13, 2009 yea well im not driving it untill ive checked everything over properly! need to get on the case asap but have no tools as our lockup got raided a couple of months back and everything got jacked, including our generator and a mini clubman with a stock 1275 GT lump, totally gutted! must admit im not much of an expert with this crossflows but they seem pretty simple! i need someone with half a brain and some tools to come join me!
Badgerman85 Posted May 13, 2009 Author Report Posted May 13, 2009 booked into WPE tuesday morning next week, im sure they can sort it =)
