Mick The Cabbie Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 Show season is upon us! Do/would you leave your bonnet up whilst leaving ya car unattended for hours on end at a show/event? Or do you only have ya engine on show when you are near ya car? Anyone ever had any problems from thieving pikeys nicking bits off ya engine?? Some bits can be easily be unclipped or pulled off!! Obviously the bigger the event the greater the risk??? Discuss pleeeze
Slammed Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 dad told me a story when bitd in 92 someone at one of the essex meet/show had his bonnet up showing his newly built xflow on 45's and he left the bonnet up, some gits cam around and nicked the 45's!!! people didnt see the bloke do this but they did see a bloke walking around briefly with some twin 45's the extremes people go to get some twin webbers back in the 90's, well it was in essex
Copey Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 no never, i avoid openin the bonnet at all at shows to be honest, it lets the car down at the mo, but even if i did open the bonnet i would never leave it open unattended
Trevmk3 Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 i wouldnt leave mine unattended or actually open it as i fear someone may clean it and make it run right
Retro-gone. Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 is it just me or does anyone else think leaving the bonnet up spoils the lines of the car . anyway i dont leave mine up incase vibrating cake sees my paint bubbling on my block, id never live it down
mk1mexico Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 I have left mine up in the past, purely because theres something different under there, i get hounded with questions though, and then cant see the show/meet, so tend to shut it Left it up at CF last year with no worries
emu Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 Ive started leaving mine up at some shows. Its tends to get the old girl a bit more attention.
antz Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 i always do it. mainly cos its clear under the bonnet than on top
2.8i Cossie Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 mines up cos its somethign different under the bonnet. But its always with someone on the club stand and im never too far away!
red-rum816 Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 so u think people from essex are scum then, i would leave my bonnet open.
vibrating_Cake Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 is it just me or does anyone else think leaving the bonnet up spoils the lines of the car . anyway i dont leave mine up incase vibrating cake sees my paint bubbling on my block, id never live it down just so i cant say I TOLD YOU SO!!! hehehe. i always leave mine up and open, never had a problem, although all the shows i go to i trust.... if it was a chavfest with doughnuts etc happening around cars n stuff, it stays well and truly down! never had a problem, my other half was gonna properly slap me when i left the bonnet open, saying "what if they cut you're break lines, what if this what if that" they gotta be bloody sad sad people to do something like that to be fair! and at a car show, everybody has the same interests, they like their cars and they respect what you have done to yours. (apart from tony cause his paint is bubbling and i just couldnt resist the temptation to give it a quick poke and watch all the paint flake off.... ) haha only joking but yeah, i did at donnington 10,000 people went there through the weekend!. only thing i do do, is after ive been on the track and have the bonnet open, i put do not touch, extremley hot or something on a piece of paper somewhere in the engine bay =)...
SebringRS Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 Me and my dad went to the Retro Show last year in the Mexi-cossie & left the bonnet open for the whole day. It wasent until he opened it when he got home he found tht the carbon-fibre RS badge was missin. Not a big thing, but still you shouldn't have to keep an eye on your car when you leave your bonnet open for people to look NOT touch.
Fishtailparka Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 In the past my bonnet has remanied firmly closed as the engine bay was a bit of a disgrace. Now I have a reasonably respectable bay it is kept shut for fear of people pinching shiny things.
mk2cortinadan Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 now mines been painted over the winter ive left it up at a few shows no problems.... but theres always somebody on our stand we did a show at canvey last year and me pal had his nice dustcaps nicked of his mk1 lotus!
Copey Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 you know its a shame that we even have to have this poll to be honest there shouldnt be a problem, people should respect others property and in fairness most people do, just a few that ruin it and make everyone over cautious and suspicious tis a shame really
jimbo Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 is it just me or does anyone else think leaving the bonnet up spoils the lines of the car Agreed!
caprinerd Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 is it just me or does anyone else think leaving the bonnet up spoils the lines of the car Agreed! and again i dont open the bonnet as im only running a pinto so not much to see
Superblue76 Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 I've had people paying too much attention to my cibie spotlight covers in the past. They walked away rather sheepishly when I got near the car
marky4 Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 used to leave bonnet up but have heared a few stories about people having bits go missing to don't any more bloody scum bags
dawesy1700 Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 i always leave mine up as i run lovely bike carbs n it confuses the old boys, they never know what they are, hahaha, but again, there's always sum1 on our club stand so im happy to leave it up and we have cordon the stand off so people cant reach the cars.
Smudger105e Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 It doesn't worry me, people seeing under the bonet, but... I was at beaulieu with the 105e Club at the weekend, and while in the museun saw a lad of about 12/13 with his parents. He was trying to shut the door to a half size caravan, and operating the lock, I then saw him trying the twist grip throttle of a scooter in the museum. Parents didn't say anything to him. I later saw the three of them in the Club's marquee, and the lad was OK, but the mother started puching buttons on the DVD screens in the pillars of the Pimp Anglia. Also at the NEC last year, Tash and Baz's son (a year old) was asleep on the back seat of my car on the club stand, and some old guy opened the car door and woke him up. "Oh, sorry, I didn't realise he was there". Maybe not, but why open the door to my fooking car without asking. Leave the cars alone, if you want to see in or sit in, ask!! Rant over.
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 i would never leave my bonnet up whilst im not around you just cant trust people now a days
DanV Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Ive heard of people playing with carbs n stuff when bonnets are left up also. Not a lot of fun when you come to drive home after a great day/weekend out to find your car doesnt run properly anymore. People who tamper with or steal from others cars should be shot for everyones entertainment at the end of the show.
