Trevmk3 Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 Bloody winner, got it done so should be in it for CF :D hey, getting slightly annoyed as i keep trying to get the car started but im failing. not sure if it is lack of power from the battery, or something else? im crap when it comes to things like this so may take some time to get through to me. basically when i turn the key it trys to turn over but there is no sign of it trying to fire up to now. its a pinto but not sure if it is points or what (as said im not that good with this) any help to try and get me somewhere near to the engine actaully firing is appreciated ask me questions as tto what it is or isnt doing or what it has or hasnt got and i will try and answer it to help you help me
Admin Vista Posted May 17, 2009 Admin Report Posted May 17, 2009 Give us a few more clues, i.e.: Is it cranking normally but not firing? Is it cranking slowly?
Trevmk3 Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 it cranks normally but doesnt fire but soon trys to die and go slow (this is with the backup of power from the vectra aswell)
jimbo Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 Are you getting a spark at the spark plug? Cheers, Jim
Trevmk3 Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 no idea as of yet as i didnt have anyone around to check
Trevmk3 Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 just got a neighbour to help. getting what looks like a weak spark
razersedge Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 points dirty or damp in the dizzy at a random guess just remember it needs fuel, compression and spark to run if one isn't there then it won't run
Trevmk3 Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 i did check in the dizzy the other day and it was dry, not sure if the points are dirty though, whats the best way of cleaning them up? what other things should i be checking for?
razersedge Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 a bit of sand paper or similar fold it over and rub it between the contacts also clean the contacts on the dizzy cap and the roter arm
razersedge Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 also take off the air filter and look down the carb and twist the throttle linkage and check there is fuel going down the carb and take each spark plug out one at a time and put it back in it's lead but resting on something metal and give the engine a quick turn over to check your getting a spark to each cyclinder
Trevmk3 Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 cheers Mike, will give it a good looking at. could probably do with getting some new leads at some point but if i can get it running until i get payed i will be happy
razersedge Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 condenser and point's always keep a spare set in the car because the new ones are not made like they use to be and don't last long
Trevmk3 Posted May 22, 2009 Author Report Posted May 22, 2009 got the bloody thing started today, i think because it has been sat a while it just needed a helping hand from my mate and brother to bump it into life but i have checked all the other bits aswell as maintence and will stock up on a few extra bits
