engine choice

hello all

after running down to the pod this year for the cf show ( buy the way to much plastic for me ) in my mk 5 cortina pinto powered with the family i was for some unknown reason nervous during the journey listening for noise constantly watching the temp gauge so have decided to change the engine dont get me wrong i love the pinto but feel if i am going to do a lot of miles i think possibly should look at installing a more modern ford engine wot do you think

which conversion would be cheap and easy for my beloved cortina all sugestions greatly received by the way great turnout on the stand it was nice to see old skool well represented amongst all that plastic

a few people have used zetecs in other cars, not sure how much work is needed to fit them but dont think it is alot from what i have heard, someone else will know better than i will though

Nothing wrong with the pinto, it'll handle traffic and load fine providing the cooling system is properly maintained. If you got cash to spare, 150bhp is easily achievable in the right hands with 200 possible depending on budget...............and you don't need to re-engineer the whole car to fit a different engine.

Back in the 70's and 80's company reps were hammering down the motorways and sitting in summer traffic jams in Cortinas.

 

And god knows how many pinto powered transits got the arse ragged off them by millions of builders and the odd bank robber.

 

Provided it is looked after properly then the Pinto is a more than capable engine. Ok, it might not be refined as a modern 16 valver but then the rest of the car probably isnt as refined as a new Focus or Mondeo either

done 1400 miles in 1 week in my pinto escort,loved it. You can't beat a well maintained & tuned pinto.

i seem to be detecting a pattern here perhaps should be looking to invest some hard earned pennies into the pinto rather than something more modern any suggestions where to start already has high lift cam belive fr32 and vernier fitted running standard 2.0 carb

engine belived to be 2,1 so i was told

pistons marked 2.0 +60 as far as i can remember

If you're worried about overheating why not a leccy fan and some oil coolers?

Get a reconditioned Pinto from a good reconditioner. I got mine from Specialised Engines in Grays. Whilst it was being fitted, I put a new clutch, water pump, fuel pump and Aldon Ignitor electronic ignition on it. Quite happily coped with commuting 160 miles a day, 540 miles a week for a month and averaged 300 miles a week outside that with a few 350 mile round trips to the Pod and a couple of 600+ ones up to Scotland. Utterly reliable engine. Never used any oil and it was just a case of putting petrol in and going. Returned 36MPG all day long and even managed to return 33MPG on a trip to Santa Pod with 4 people in, a boot load of fuel and 3 trips up the strip.
