Thermostat piece o tat

The temp gauge has not moved up more than 5 mm since i bought the cortina, the heaters are never more than slightly lukewarm but you have to keep your hand by the blower for about 20 seconds before you can determine if it is a bit warm or if its just your imagination. Is this a thermostat problem? Nearly broke down again last night same problem as last time spluttering then cut out and not start for 5 minutes im gonna put new leads on today i can only think its arcing coz of the foggy freezin wet weather Anyway do i need a new thremostat? do they just pop out and do i need a gasket for the housing if so? Im sure i just junked the thermo on the capri is this a bad idea?

it might just be the car isnt insulated enough to bring in much heat .

 

the temp gauge might not be very accurate .

 

do the pipes in the engine bay get hot ?

 

the thermostat is there so the car heats up quicker . . the thermostat opens as the car heats up and allows (cooler)water from the radiator into the system . it could be stuck open and not allowing the car to heat up properly .

 

not sure on your car but usually it will be a couple of 10mm bolts holding the housing on to the block and a hose on the other side of it .

 

scrape the gasket off . put the thermostat in the same way old one came off .

put on the new gasket . bolt back on and re attach the water hose . might need a new hose clip too

Cheers buddy i'll have a crack at that in a bit and post the results! we could do with a bit of heat in the car coz its fecking freezing out at the mo! Bought a gasket set with clip for 90p from local car shop - bargain

Junking the thermostat is in one of my top 5 most hated bodges... its there for a reason, running a car without a stat in extreme hot or cold coditions is just daft.

if you dont use a stat in the summer the coolant goes through the rad far to fast for the rad to effectivly cool the water and a good thrashing will boil it over in no time.

in the winter months no stat will result in a heater that dont work, an auto choke sticking on (thus poor fuel economy) and basicly an engine that runs far too cold doing it no good at all.

u should get a gasket with the new stat. done mine back in the summer. u need to drain the system then like said clean off all old gasket then fit it all back on

you get a whole array of various gasgets with the thermostat

 

simple job as described above

I've got no stat and it never gets above the blue on the guage. Mind you, I haven't got a heater either

i ran mine a couple of days with no thermostat engine just wouldnt get warm and nothing in the way of heating

sounds like you havent got a stat or its stuck open.

 

sometimes the only way to do a 'temporary repair' on the cooling system is to junk the stat. but i agree that you should have one
