fezza_mat Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 ive been thinking about this my dads friend has had his landrover chassis galvanized and it got me thinking what about doing a hole car would stop the worrey of rust so ive been doing a little resarch and cant find anything about dipping cars so i thought ask here and see if anyone has done it or no any company that does it many thanks mat
V8ian Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Dont think its pratical to galvanise a old car, bearing in mind its a molton metal process distortion could be a real problem, I suspect there is now an Electrolytic process that things like VW/porsche use. but how obtainable is the process, I havent a clue.
Admin Vista Posted August 4, 2009 Admin Report Posted August 4, 2009 I think vista's mk1 is galvanised It's certainly had something done to it but as it happened before I owned it I'm not 100% sure what it was. Electroplating maybe? Whatever mine looks like, I share V8IANS suspicions about hot dip galvanising causing distortion of body panels. Of course there's always E-coating? http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/
paul capri Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 I was always of the knowledge that galvanizing used too much heat and it would buckle the panels, its more widely used on trailors and like you say landrover chassis as they are alot stronger. electrophoretic coating is a better option.
fezza_mat Posted August 4, 2009 Author Report Posted August 4, 2009 well thanks for the info dont think ill be galvanizing it then maybe e coating thou im gunna ring them tomorrow see what the price is thanks fellas
paul capri Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 surface processing is really your best option. They acid dip your car to remove all paint, rust, underseal, and just about everything thats not good quality steel, then they spray the whole car in primer, this costs £800. They then give you the car back so you can do any repairs that have become evident, then you give it back to them again for the e-coat process which I think is another £800. Theres quite a long waiting list though I think!! Worth every penny in my opinion, when its all done your essentially building up a new car and you know its not going to rot out again in 10 years time! If only ford did this from new. Although if they had done I expect old skool fords would be much more common now, making them less valuble, desirable and cool. Maybe its a good think they didn't then...
fezza_mat Posted August 4, 2009 Author Report Posted August 4, 2009 now thats a lot of money well worth it in my book shame i cant afford it worth a thought thou
fastferretzetecmk1 Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 A few years ago i was restoring a Ford D series breakdown truck at the ford dealer i worked at, the service manager had a bright idea to try and galvernise the doors id just repaired, well to say they were knackered upon return was an understament, twisted to hell, not a good idea to do a full shell,
caprinerd Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 arnt some modern cars galved like the audi
