"Where is my car?" questions. FOA admin

I often see on this and other sites the above question. People post up the reg of theirs or their Dads old car and ask if anyone knows where it is.

Usually someone says according to DVLA it hasn't been taxed since 1985 or whatever.

So now, the RS2000, Mexico or whatever is pretty obviously off the road, and has been for donkeys years. Almost certainly scrapped.

 

What is to stop me or anyone else applying for the V5, saying I just bought the car?

With the price of Mex logbooks it would be a very lucrative scam.

I'm not suggesting people should do it, I am suggesting that people shouldn't put the reg up in the first place, and anyone who does should have their post reported to admin for editing.

 

Look at it another way. I could apply for the logbook, then steal someones Escort, get some vin tags made up and sell your stolen 1300L to someone else off the site and tell them it's a Mexico.

If someone applies for a logbook though, the DVLA contact the registered owner to confirm that someone has applied for a logbook/the car has been sold so surely that would not be an issue? Or is that not what you meant

most of the time they have been scrapped so you couldnt get the log book

 

or if some one still owns the car and its just been stood for years dvla will write to them asking if theyved sold it informing them some one has applied for the log book

Nobody ever sent off the logbook to say it was scrapped back then. I know I certainly never did. Does this mean I can apply for all my old logbooks for all the Escorts I scrapped.

 

I heard of a garage that applied for all the logbooks of ex works cars by finding the reg numbers off old rallying pics. And got them!

Hmm, I see what you mean. Not sure where you would stand ... I may ask the DVLA where they stand on that sort of thing

In which case if it stops one person losing their car it is worth thinking about IMHO.

 

Jo, I have bought quite a few cars that haven't been on the road for decades, they were never sorned because sorns weren't invented back then. In fact it was probably one of the reasons sorns were invented. Nobody had any way of telling if they had been scrapped or just put in a shed and forgotten. Never had a problem getting the logbook, and nothing has changed.

DVLA will only issue a log book if that number is on the computer system to start with and they dont get a reply from the previous owner. But having said that, a logbook doesn't neccesarily make you the legal owner, but see what you are saying, as you could have sold a car on by the time any poop hits the fan or the true owner comes to light.
