robertthorpe90 Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 After having got fed up with the constand backfireing, running like crap, driving like it on 5 cylinders till 4000rpm and about 9mpg normal driving, i have taken decision to take my mk3 capri off the road for lil while. was going to just do up my engine get it running proper again and mabye make some few engine mods untill................................ just went to purley cruise in croydon and bloke there with his capri but it had 770BHP and 800pound of tourque V8 supercharge beautiful piece of machinery and as my freinds and i dribbled over this car i got talking with the the owner Ray Harris (not one of the H.P.E lot, but a top bloke!!) and after about 2 hours in deep discussion has made me think that V6 is just not worth it! so its V8 power iam looking for now going to go for a ford 302 engine and a american T5 manual box if any one knows of ones going for resonable please let me know, brilliant thing is is he has loads of spares so thinking that saving up and gettin the best of both worlds my capri and V8. anyone else got any advice/ contacts/ tips for me ?? thanks rob
stevepeanut Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 sounds like a good plan rob, but I would check the insurance before you build it, cos you'd be gutted if you couldnt get cover once its done, I would love to V8 my capri, but just have the time or money
DarrenM Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 I can recommend the 302 route mate. Take a look at my car for some tips. I may be stripping the car down and thought I'd see about getting some of the parts to fit the 302 duplicated. http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/phpBB2/vi ... c&start=15
V8ian Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 Yep a 302+T5 wil fall in, my freind asked me to help drop a 302 ibto a Mk1 capri for a photoshoot, I turned up with hammers and grinder, Well the engine and box were sitting on the X member before my cuppa was cold, the T5 lever came up in the right hole and we even had the right sump on the engine, Fox Mustang I think, I think the T5 cosworth X member would fit without much work, the only previous mod done to the car was the rad panel had been modified to fit a Audi100 rad, IIRC, 302s are shorter than 5.0s, and the water pump on the 5.0 is a serp counter rotating pump so moving things like alternator becomes harder, short pumps are available thru summit racing, The 302 is a better bet for big hp as the early 5.0 blocks have a tendency to split thru the lifter valley if lent on to much
robertthorpe90 Posted August 15, 2009 Author Report Posted August 15, 2009 thanks lads lots of help here so far so what cars would i find the 302 engine and the T5 box then? what sort of price am i looking at for engine and box ? and i have been told that i dont have to change my front subframe as it will fit straight in just wit ha set of special mouts (which i can get hold of for cheap)
robertthorpe90 Posted August 21, 2009 Author Report Posted August 21, 2009 Well i have sorced a full 302 enigne out of a ford fairview, £200 but needs rebuild, was going to rebuild it any way so suits me well, now i have just one more hurdle to get over which is i need a gearbox!! dose any one know if the yank T5 box is the same as the cosworth boxes?? would i be able to just change the bellhousing? or is it completly diffrent? thanks rob
V8ian Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 IRRC, the Cosworth World Class box is internally the same as the Mustang, BUT I think the bellhousing to gearbox is different, which will set the gearbox over to one side, the left. I think Real Steel sell a bellhousing that will correct this, the other difference that I can think of is the input spline is 21 splines on the cosworth and 11 with the mustang, Camaro boxes will fit too, Word of warning BW make over 200 different versions of the T5. Tremec TKO5 is the same gearbox, I think
robertthorpe90 Posted August 21, 2009 Author Report Posted August 21, 2009 ok then, thanks for your help mate, would i be able to change the input shafts over, if the internals are the same then surley i could simply change the bellhousing and the input shaft it would fit on?? also what proip shaft shoul i use, someone said i would be able to keep the propshaft and back axle the same? thanks rob
V8ian Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 Atlas LSD will last for a while, after that you have to look at somthing stronger, 8", 8.8", or 9", ford axles will fit the bill, but would require narrowing, Possibly what I use,if you can find one, Toyota celica, would more than likely fit, Prop, even for the T5/Atlas will probably need modifying, Whatever route you plan, think of a budget, then double it, building a bigger powered car will eat your money,, but if you stick to your plan & budget, and dont get swayed too much you can have a quick car for not a lot of money, It may be worth buying the whole donor car, then you have a 8 or 9" axle, and a gearbox, Autos with a V8 are not such a bad thing,
DarrenM Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 For the box try looking on the Mustang owners club GB site For Sale or put up a wanted ad as well as ebay. Axle wise an Atlas would be fine and bolts in but is expensive for one with a LSD. As Ian says, is there any running gear off the car you have the engine from? My car is coming apart soon and I will look at getting some of the parts duplicated .
robertthorpe90 Posted August 24, 2009 Author Report Posted August 24, 2009 unfortunatly no donor car just trying to build one from parts and whats left on the car, its gonna be tough and take time but then again it shall be worth it in the end lol. i have the engine and iam just stripping it down at the moment will be getting close to a full rebuild as parts for the engine arnt too much. if any one dose a have any spare parts/ knows somewhere that sells new and performance parts for not silly money then i will be interested? at the moment iam in need of most the auxiallrys off of the engine e.g distributor gear ect ect i have inlet manifold but need a carb, any ideas what sort of size i should use, looking for decent bit of power but also need whats left of any fuel economy lol thanks rob
dannyb Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 about 9mpg normal driving, try driving in a straight line for once and not sideways with tyre smoke billowing out and paint your door shuts
DoireMan Posted September 3, 2009 Report Posted September 3, 2009 Where did you find the engine, or was it a one off sort of job?
