samurai Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 I just fitted -2 inch springs to my mk1 escort which has 2.8i struts and its only lowered my 15mm! The new spring length is 220mm and the old 300mm,a 80 mm difference! 65mm is missing Any ideas?
SmokeEm Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 Mine took a while to settle - about 100 miles or so
samurai Posted September 11, 2009 Author Report Posted September 11, 2009 A guy just came from 4 doors down to see what i was doing and he said he used to race mk2 escorts and showed me a pictures of him racing, then he said it wont go any lower because at the bottom of the insert there is a big rubber thing stopping it going any lower....i was not impressed after i had been under the car fighting to get the new springs on for a few hours! 1 side is done...ill do the other later as i got things to do and ill see what you guys think
Andrade Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 you have to check if the shock bottomed out or something. try bounce the car, if it feels completely solid or you hear a big 'thud' it means the shock has no space to move and is hitting the bottom.
Stu_B Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 It won't sit low if you've only done one side. Wait till you've done both
samurai Posted September 11, 2009 Author Report Posted September 11, 2009 It does not hit bottom springs are alittle siffer which is good
Andrade Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 It does not hit bottom springs are alittle siffer which is good maybe the springs you had are soft, so compress more than the ones you have. the length of the uncompressed springs would not be directly proportional to the length of the compressed springs as the compression rates are different
samurai Posted September 11, 2009 Author Report Posted September 11, 2009 I finish 30 min ago When i turn the streering wheel after a turn there is a loud bang! Also i noticed that the lower spring cup touchs the strut tower...
classiccapri Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 the loud bang is the spring moving in the spring cup. did you re-fit the rubber hose like things back on to the springs? i left these off my capri first time and i soon put them back on. hope that helps.
samurai Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 Yeah i put the rubber bits back on teh new spring Today i looked under the arches and i see the legs have moved back about 1 inch away from the strut tower which i guess is fine now ive not drove it yet to see it the banging is still there, ill give it a spin tomorrow.
classiccapri Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 give it a drive and see if they settle down properly and stop the banging.
keeh Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 check the are in the spring cups fully both upper and lower, when i lowered mine is was banging a lot and it turned out the springs weren't seated. i lowered it that much the springs fall out when its jacked up
samurai Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 Right I took some videos! Needs a good rolling road tune up,thats why it cuts out every now and then due to lack of fuel low down! Did some other clips which had some side ways action but the camera man was bad and didnt film the good bits! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0hPJ7PWJNw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEMZ7UTW8-o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPbGNM2fRd0
bomber1 Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 your neighbours must love you looks good tho m8
samurai Posted September 15, 2009 Author Report Posted September 15, 2009 The guy next door loves it and he is the type of person to moan about everything to The guy 2 doors down also loves it as he used to race mk2 escort stock cars. The girl next door hates my guts so no matter what i do she will always hate it i rev it up and hit the limiter for her its worth burning the fuel for it

samurai Posted September 18, 2009 Author Report Posted September 18, 2009 Right im booked in at HT Racing at 3rd Oct at 10am Gonna need a new cam belt as this new one is cracking already at the same time i get the tuneing done!
bomber1 Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 was it a new one thats cracking already? what make belt u using going to use?
samurai Posted September 18, 2009 Author Report Posted September 18, 2009 was it a new one thats cracking already? what make belt u using going to use? A new Kent belt done less then an hour and a half running....from the start the belt wanted to go backwards and up the pulley back plate! and as ive been running the engine and had alittle drive this is the result now.
bomber1 Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 not good are the gates power belts any better? where did u get the pullys and alternator belt from?
samurai Posted September 18, 2009 Author Report Posted September 18, 2009 The power grip pulley system i got from burton power and they give me a nasty redish colour one! so while i was working at Vulcan Steve let me swap them for the blue ones I used the injection alt so the alt pulley had to be opened out to fit over the spindle. I used longer gates belt as the alt was too big to go back towards the engine so the small belt was too small, but if you use the small alt then the gates belt that came with it would be fine. Them gates belts are good,if i compared it to that kent cam belt you see that the belt looks old, dirty, discoloured and maybe shrinking alittle.
