vibrating_Cake Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 how hard are steering racks to fit correctly (mk3 capri) and is it worth getting a quick rack?? manual rack btw... i know ill have to send it off to get tracked up, just wondering to save me a bit of dosh how hard they are to swap over yourself???
caprinerd Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 quick racks are ok but very heavy when trying to park it helps a bit to have roller top mounts
vibrating_Cake Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 lmao i only posted that literally a second ago... any idea on how hard they are to fit on a driveway??? im not too fussed about the heavy steering, the only places i park it is in supermarket carparks, or carparks in general, i tend to stay away from city centres as im a bit out in the sticks
SmokeEm Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Piece of piss to fit with a socket set and a hammer
caprinerd Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Piece of piss to fit with a socket set and a hammer x2 brakets that hold rack on have locking tabs so will need to be replaced but thats the awkward bit tops of half hour to do wobbly
vibrating_Cake Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 Piece of piss to fit with a socket set and a hammer piece of piss to fit and get right??? i was looking on that capri site (you know, the one with all the guides etc) and they have a steering rack guide and it looks like a bit of a bitch from how he describes it... is it really that hard?
caprinerd Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 if you lift the engine a bit it will help give you some room to get to the tabs but seriously it aint a hard job wobbly you fitted the ztec so this would be a walk in the park mate

escort21 Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Motorfactors for about 35quid...got one a couple of months back
vibrating_Cake Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 Motorfactors for about 35quid...got one a couple of months back gone up in price lol!
Beakster Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Motorfactors for about 35quid...got one a couple of months back gone up in price lol! Last time I bought a manual rack it was about 17 pounds. From A&M Factors in Reading 0118-950 5070. You give them the old rack back aswell so they can have it reconned. I also got a power rack from them for my 2.8 and it was 119 pounds, cheaper than most places.
emu Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Its dead easy mate. Its all pretty self explanatory, and there isnt anything really to catch you out because we have told you about the lock tabs, so you wont spend hours trying to work out why no socket, of any size known to mankind, will fit those greasy bolt heads There is a guide to DIY tracking in the 'How-to' Room
vibrating_Cake Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 done now... had a little bump... bent the steering arm (as i was turning out of the place i'd just bought the steering rack from....) so... fitted it outside the shop, my steering wheel is now upside down lol!
emu Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 least you bent the old one, not the new one Just whip the wheel off rather than messing with the rack/column joint. but make sure the rack is centred before you put it back on.
Davewrc Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Just take the wheel off and bolt it back on the right way
vibrating_Cake Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 lol ill check if theres 2.7 turns clockwise and 2.7 turns anticlockwise first.... howd u take the wheel off?
caprinerd Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 big nut in the middle and pull it and after you crack your self in the mouth ( like i did) and mopped the blood up put it back on
emu Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 smack the steering wheel on either side until it falls off (obviously undo the centre nut first). hit towards the dashboard though, its cheaper than a dentist
Fiesta Steve Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Just slacken the nut first, then whack it, when its loose, then undo the nut. Unless your like the dentist
