GT_Jim Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Can a dizzy be converted to not need vacuum advance? and what is the difference between them
fastferretzetecmk1 Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Sure can, ive have a few done at aldon performance in brierly hill, just tell them the spec of your engine they will make the advance curve to suit
GT_Jim Posted October 7, 2009 Author Report Posted October 7, 2009 id really like not to buy any as its only for testing some twin 40's before i go edis so i can show the results for my uni reports
Fiesta Steve Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 To convert you vacuum dizzy to non-vacuum just leave the pipe off !!!

Toby Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Then one simple step to distributor less ignition! But it's true, just unplug it to try the carbs. You'll benefit with some low end drivability from having the advance curve altered at a later date but you can see if you like the top end power with the carbs and the pipe pulled off - just set your full advance around 30 degrees by reving the engine to 4k or so with your strobe light attached. You might get away with a bit more, but start there. You don't need any more advance than you need if that makes sence - you wont gain by having too much! I hope you're thinking of a RR tune anyway or you wont really know the benefit of the carbs if they're jetted wrongly. - The dyno man will do / check your timing.
GT_Jim Posted October 9, 2009 Author Report Posted October 9, 2009 thanks for that Tony, but the engine isnt going to be in the cortina for some time. I am using my pre cross on the dyno at uni and using it for my final year project talking about performance tuning but i have to include emissions control as it makes the report longer etc so thats why Im going to try and build an efi pre crossflow with throttle bodies which I am in the process of getting. I have already started modelling the engine on a specific piece of software.I will get some pics over the weekend to show you all if you are interested
Toby Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 thanks for that Tony You are welcome John Yes please very interested. FYI Increasing your CR will improve light throttle fuel consumption. But the engine may knock badly on W.O.T - you will have to take timing out - if you have mapped ignition. Free flow exhausts can reduce pumping losses and improve fuel efficiency too. Sounds like a good fun project.
GT_Jim Posted October 9, 2009 Author Report Posted October 9, 2009 you sir are a fountain of knoledge! Ill get some screen shots but basically i am using old tuning principles but applying more modern techniques the one are i really want to get into is tribology which is all about surfaces and how they generate friction and how coatings and other surface treatments can change an engine but its mega expensive but i will have all the theory for when i do have the cash though btw sorry about the Tony thing!
Fiesta Steve Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 btw sorry about the Tony thing! He gets called worse
Toby Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 btw sorry about the Tony thing! He gets called worse Tody for one!

No worries mate The internet is a bigger fountain.... I heard something the other day along the lines of their grand parent not having a computer and could they print off a copy of the internet for them Have a look here - if you didn't know about this already... http://www.jsme.or.jp/English/awardg06-07.pdf Tribology - good word - Will you be a tribologist?
GT_Jim Posted October 11, 2009 Author Report Posted October 11, 2009 Thanks for that, I have been reading a few reports similar to this the main source of engine friction is the piston rings which are about half of the whole engines mechanical loses the problem with using DLC's or that is that at about 400*c they change their atomic structure which is ok for cams and valve gear as they never get that hot but it would wear out quite quickly on the cylinders I also have a few reports on improving mechanical efficiency for superchargers as i will be talking about forced induction as a future design consideration as it would be quite simple to add to the engine models I am working on
Toby Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Interesting - then you have 2 ring pistons as a way of saving friction And thermo barrier coatings on pistons to improve thermal efficience - supposedly. I hadn't thought about DLC on rings / bores but there are other coatings like Nikasil for aluminum bores - is there an equivilent for cast iron? I knew diamonds don't like heat which is why they tend to be used on stone and non ferrous cutting tools and not steel cutting tools. Apparently Turbos were initially designed as a means of increasing mpg by improving VE but then people realised the performance increase and mpg went out the window! You are going to have fun! Cool project
GT_Jim Posted October 12, 2009 Author Report Posted October 12, 2009 when things get under way i will start up a thread in the restos page, i really need to pull my finger out with the rest of the car too I have a technical report on CI engines and coatings but i have not read it yet so I will let you know when i get round to it I am really interested by engines and its what I want to get into when i finish uni so I wanted to use an engine i knew and had data for which is why i picked my pre corss and dismissed the zetec i was going to fit!
Toby Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 PM me when the post is up and running - very interested
