D4N Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 Someone gave me a log book and plates for a mk2 escort 2door Whats your thought as obviously there is no car. Is it illegal to find a shell without a log book and put these plates on?
stevepeanut Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 very illegal, called "ringing" think you'd get locked up for that
GT_lenny Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 yes its very naughty indeed, but you could put the log book on ebay for a "collector" ahem
Savvi Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 I'd call it a very "grey" area !!! If it was a MGB or similar you could buy a brand new shell and "re-build" the car into it, however as no one is making shells at present it makes it illegal to "ring" your v5 It's normally frowned upon as a shell without a V5 has had to come from somewhere and most of the time could well be stolen Having said that a lot of people would / have used a different V5 on a different shell As said it's surprising how many people would buy it as a "collectors item" on ebay.

D4N Posted November 8, 2009 Author Report Posted November 8, 2009 Ok think its safe to say i wont be trying that..
Savvi Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 Theres not much they can do if it's sold that way
D4N Posted November 8, 2009 Author Report Posted November 8, 2009 Theres not much they can do if it's sold that way Even if i did buy one without paperwork. I would feel guilty knowing it would be some poor guys stolen car
Savvi Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 Not if it was from another country with a foreign plate etc ?
Mr2Caps Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 My old neighbour bought an innocenti mini years ago, and restored it, went to insure and tax it and was told there was another mini with the reg already on the road, the guy he bought it from had somehow managed to re use the id on a hillclimb car, a lot of rally cars have been reshelled with the same id's, not sure how that works!
Mick The Cabbie Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 It's quite common to see Escorts which are obviously not in their original shell/logbook combination. Anyone who knows what to look for in an Escort will see this!! Also, there are lots of re-shelled RS's with non RS shells but still on an RS book. Over the years, Ive lost count of how many later model Mk1s I've seen with early tax free books & even early shells and later reg's or RS books etc etc. I once knew of a 74 Mk1 RS2000 in a 68 shell due to the original shell being beyond repair and a very early 68 Mk1 with a 71 book. My old Mk2 Mex had at some point been re-shelled into an auto tunnel shell. Was still a Mex tho.. Escorts are probably one of the most swapped about cars known to man. I can't see a problem as long as everything involved has been 'payed for' Not saying I've ever done it tho
turnover Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 ok i will have my opinion here,if lets say you own a Mk1 Rs 1600 and it beyond repair or not worth repairing,So you buy say a nice 2dr mk1 shell, are you gona tell me that you would leave the 2dr shell id on it and leave as that say 1.1 L xl sport or what ever, then put all the rs bits on it,or would you put the rs id back on the new shell with your type 49 bits welded on,hmmm let me think,i think you all know the answer, just my opinion so dont take offence , law obidding citizens
bigglesmk2 Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 As said a very grey area. What does my head in is when a shell turns up with no id,when obviously at some point it will of had an id Why has the id gone awol ,is the shell stolen or what ?
Copey Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 As said a very grey area. What does my head in is when a shell turns up with no id,when obviously at some point it will of had an id Why has the id gone awol ,is the shell stolen or what ? sometimes people start restos and lose all the info for a shell, i have known people do this, its a very stupid thing to do
4DOOR-SHERWOOD Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 yes lolts of people start a resto etc and then lose paper work and tags etc... it may have sat in a garage 20 years and now they are fetching good money people are selling them. You can buy fully prepared rally shells with no I.D so as people can reshell a smashed/rlled one....just like the works teams did and still do! I dont see a problem with buying a decent import shell and shelling a rotten damaged RS into it, if you can build any old ford from bits and have it running for eveyone to see then....job well done! keep hold of it and if u get the oppertunity to use it...do it!
caprinerd Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 i read a book on escorts some time ago and ford were racing a lhd escort in one country and the exact same reg was on a rhd being raced somewhere else at the same time and this was a ford works car/s
X-pack-Glyn Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 And how many 3 litre S capris on the road started life as a later 2.8i...and how many 2 litre S capris now sport a 3 litre engine and a much earlier reg no..... and how many lasers are now a 2 litre S...i could go on and on...
Mick The Cabbie Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Have a look at all the RWD mark three & four Escys on the rally circuits which are obviously on Mk1 or 2 books. 68 G reg Mk3 anyone?? They're out there. I've seen quite a few late classic shape Mini's with pre 72 reg's. The Vee Dub boys play at the same game too with Beetles etc
Von Thrash Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 I bought a rotten mk1 Xr2 years ago. Kept the engine and running gear, and sold the shell with the V5. 2 years later an mot'd fiesta with the same reg. (memorable) appeared on ebay. Was obviously a different shell (no rear bulge), contacted seller to ask if he knew this. He was a bit sheepish so i suspect he did. . . .
rallyesport04 Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 keep an eye out in classic ford in the rally section you see pre 1/1/73 mk2's lol ive also seen 90 defenders on tax free registrations impossible as the 90 came out in '84
