puddy Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 I would like to see in the write ups how a car performs, handles, brakes for all the mods done ,rather than the usual "its got this set of brakes, its got this set of shox" ,etc,etc....................... I want to know an honest opinion, good or bad! puddy
Jon Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 I would like to see in the write ups how a car performs, handles, brakes for all the mods done ,rather than the usual "its got this set of brakes, its got this set of shox" ,etc,etc....................... I want to know an honest opinion, good or bad! puddy Thats great as long as the owner lets you thrash their car around a track whilst on the shoot, but then alot tends to be down to personal taste. The seating position maybe all wrong for the journo as the car was built for the owner so its never gonna feel right, and how many people would continue to put their cars up for features if they were slated in the magazine each month? I remember Mr Clarkson was invited to test and report on a hot rod in Street Machine many years ago, it was one of the top rods at the time and he slated it, awkward seating position, didn't handle too well etc etc. I agree that there should be info regarding the performance but sometimes it just isn't possible, many shoots are done on the road/carpark etc during the week. We could just print what the owner tells us, but most people have a rather blinkered view of how their own car performs. I do think that now so many people have good quality digi cameras we will start to see more in progress shots in features, a few years ago you would get given a load of blurry snaps showing what was done and people would have moaned like mad if we had printed them. With the modern digi stuff it will be much easier and I too would like to see more of these finding their way into the magazines.
105Nick Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Vista mate, you got what I was saying wrong. I don't hate people with more money than me spending lots on their cars, that's just stupid. Our cars are special, if I had more money then I'd spend as much as I could on my cars just the same as I try to now. I do as much as I can myself, but I need to learn to weld now or have someone else do it, and I can't spray so that will be farmed out, just means I have to save up, and sell the mk1 for funding in the Anglia . What I was having a pop at was the people featured who seemedto be having a sudden middle age crisis and thought they'd solve it by going rallying, seemingly without having the enthusiasm or thought to appreciate that Mk1s and 2s are rare now, and buying all the unmolested/immaculate cars, having someone cut it up ad prep it, thrash it through the woods and bring out the chequebook for another decent one when they trash it. As a result, genuie enthusiasts like us lot now have trouble finding and affording the cars that we love cos all the decent ones are still being bought up hence the prices for us are geting out of reach, but not for them. How many times have you read when reading about a GRP4 escort that the owner started with a total rot box and replaced all the floors/pillars etc? And how many times on here or with regular enthusiasts do you hear of people doing that? Its why there are so few genuine RS models left, and if things carry on the way they have been the past 30 years, there won't be any left for us soon.
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Pass a new rule that they can only use 4 door escorts for rallying , then they can smash up those instead and leave the 2 doors alone !!!!!!!
brettp Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 i agree with puddy i like the group thrash no bs you just get to see what the car can do and what about a dyno soot with all different engines there v8 v6 cossie xe and more v8 s theres loads of nice cars out there and since the death of street machine they aint got the coverage and more garage scene please ,i did think the coverage of box hill was good loads of nice pics
Rick Posted January 5, 2007 Author Report Posted January 5, 2007 to add my ten bob worth. one thing i dislike about modern mag articles is the lack of detailed technical info when describing a featured car.mostly the article will be about pointing you to a part supplier rather than telling you what part can be made to fit. I have noticed since taking out a cf subscription that some articles are little more than an extension of their main advertisers pages ??? This is more what i was getting at its great dropping all these product names in, but who said theyre any good? sure theyre shiny and have a free sticker to put in your window but do they work
Retromotorsport Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Just to add a bit to 105Nick's bit.. The Group4 cars are without doubt , and has been proved on this very site, what gets you all going , the recent vids that have been put up ... rallying was the more popular , with the Crystal palace vid getting the same few people reposting. When i were a lad .... i watch rallying on World Of Sport , Dickie Davis looking flustered after the live action from Tony Ponds SDi when he hit the tree at Chatsworth, " who put that f**King tree there" and even before that , and that lead me to circuit racing... so i started watching rally cars then relised its far more civilised and from an engineering point more exciting at the circuits. So as for including Gp4 rally cars , the mags have to, there would be an outcry if there wasnt a rally car in there, Fords have been winning rallys since the days of flat caps and string back gloves (they also have had more suscess on the circuits ) . As for starting with a clean shell, yes its financial, to spend 30 k on a mint shell after you've paid someone to retore it is false econmy, better to buy a £2000 minter than a £200 rotbox thats going to cost £10,000 to restore before its cut is stupid . And No one is going to do it . As for resto pics in the mags ..yes it was getting better on the pics that the mag could use , but now its going the other way again, how many times do you see " sorry about the pics, there from me phone" ... if you want the mags to use your pics , take them in large format and light it properly, not just with the cameras flash . (yes i know i should do it better too, but then i like hiding stuff ) The simple answer to the mags question is ... You can't please all the people all of the time but you can please some of the people some of the time .

Phrased that way, then fair enough I agree, but that's not how your first statement read. No matter I've got thick skin and wasn't offended anyway.
