A-Frame Towing ??

Hi lads, just wondering is an a-frame good or bad for towing ? Can it be towed behind a car?

just been googling this, its a proper grey area, but I read that the car being towed will be rolling on the road, so must be taxed, mot'd and insured. If its up in the air on a trailer it can be sorned/mot failure/uninsured.

 

Also think about this which I found on another forum

 

"your a frame is unbraked, therefore you can only pull up to 500kg

how many cars weigh less than that?

 

you are towing a car on your a frame, the car is therefore a trailer, if it has brakes, they MUST be used. "

 

also read a lot of posts saying your insurance will be invalid if you tow using an a frame. Might be best to hire a car trailer

Cars on an A frame become a trailor so no tax or MOT BUT it needs to be under 750Kgs and have leagal tyres ect, if the frame is unbraked (not really many cars that light) braked they can be heavyer but the frames are for recovery only NOT transport

BUT !!! of the 4 times i was pulled using mine only 3 times was the above confirmed ? 1 time i was told the car on it needed tax and MOT so although that's wronge you may find you get a twat VOSA who (as most of em do or dont) doesn't know his own job and youcould end up with the car impounded and or in court, very grey area so i sold mine and bought a recovery truck cos i was sick of geting differant info/greif from bloody VOSA, the old bill semed to know the truth and only ever wanted to check i was insured on the tow vehical and all the tyers where leagal.

Make of that what you will, i know what i beleive the law to be but when those who make the bloody law and inforce it dont how sure exactly can you be ?? i gave up as i say and got a truck

Ive had one for years ,but they are illegal to use from July so im told ,Eu law !

The AA /RAC both ditched theres in favour of tow and stow some years back

The car must be taxed and MOTed and be broken down .

after borrowing jays one before buying my truck i have since been using one to take two cars to the bridge rather than one to save time and its easier if two cars are located within a few miles of each other ,

 

the one time i have been stopped i was and the truck was inspected with a tooth comb then i was advised that if i was seen towing a vehicle that is not road legal again then i should expect to be up in court for not being insured and using a recovery device in the wrong manor , according to the bobby i was pulled by they should only be used to recover a vehicle to a "safe" off road location .

 

so mines gone now and i have just bought a towing dolly which can be used legally as it is braked same sort of thing but front wheels are not on the road .

and you have full control of the vehicle having it secured to the dolly .
