Just a little spaz I have every now and again with my Dad to do with how to go about things... His view on engine modification, suspension modification, engine transplants etc is basically follow what others have done and avoid mistakes and agro, fair.. However, him being 48 and me being 19.. I feel that it's better to do what you want, how you want and not follow what the "Old Boys" did during the 80's and 90's. How do all of you feel about this, do you agree with my Old Man that learning from the past is best, or my views that being at the sharp end with a Classic car is the way to go?

all my boys ask my advice on their cars, if they want something doing to the engine they ask how to go about it and what to do and then get me to do it

tried and tested means someone else has had all the agro/headaches so you dont have to,

your modyfiying an old ford so it dont really matter what you do someones already done 90% of the time so whats the harm in learning from their mistakes :?

I have this problem with me being 19 aswell me dad tries to tell me but i say what goes on the car and he does the work. you do what you want to do dont let anyone tell you different if you like something your going to do to your car go ahead and do it. :D:thumbsup:

No matter what you are thinking of doing, someone will probably of already done it so do your homework. mag features, forums, the egeneral net, tech guides etc etc.

 

when i was doing my escort I spent hours reading magazines and features tos ee what people used, why, what the result was and how to do it myself.

As ive told my son..... If u go 'cutting edge' just make sure u have the time, knowledge, patience, tools and money to put it right....... While ill be out chasing technically advanced machinery in my tried and tested dinosaur :mrgreen:

The tried and tested methods are there for "new blood" to follow and as already said all the aggro should be covered by now BUT the scene needs to progress alongside technology and its you youngsters that can do that . If people didn't want to do things diffenert wed still be running arouns on stone wheels flinttone style...GO FOR IT

It's difficult to be "om the cutting edge" of modification to a car that's been modded for 30 or 40 years :?

Ok you can stuff an engine in no-one has used before but that's not exactly cutting edge is it and 99% after you've fitted it you'll find somone else whos already donr it and that is UBER anoying :lol:

to be fair, different people class different things as new or old, i run a 16v zetec in a capri (new) but its been done quite a bit, and some people think they dont make the power (old) but i dont care, my car is fast "for me" and its reliable as hell!

 

i also run 16" oz wheels, i dont really like these, but they dont "spoil" the car. and the oldskool boys dont seem to comment about them, just because they "fit"

 

but... if i had a screaming xflow/pinto and some oldskool deepdish 15" minilites on the car, the oldskool lot would cream their pants but i wouldnt be too fussed...

 

same with my colour choice, ive chosen rosso red as an "oldskool" colour, just because it is, i was going to go something modern, but tbh a capri is never going to modern.

 

i have also got tinted windows which the oldskool lot dont seem to like, but again, nobody has blinked an eyelid, and the newskool guys love it, and it makes driving much more comfortable, less glare etc.

 

 

thing is, at the end of the day, its your car, but for something mechanical (for example carbs on a pinto) you gotta listen to the old boys cause they do know what they are on about and it has been done for years and years with very good results. =)

Do it the easy way. Cut corners, cheat, plagiarise and generally do the same old shit that has already been done and feel comfortable in the knowledge that it will all work as everybody else's has.

 

OR...

 

 

Take all the info you can from as many sources as possible and then throw in your own thoughts and ideas, then come up with something that YOU are happy with. Many old skool techniques are still best, but it never hurts to try out new things. If the new things don't work, then you will have actually learned something for yourself and not just blindly gone through the motions :thumbsup:

The difficulty I have is that since I was 0, i've been around cars and bikes from the 30's to the mid 70's, mostly American cars, and since I was 9 i've been around muscle cars and actually been doing projects with my Dad who owns a business restoring Classic cars. So as a younger person I am fairly grounded in my knowledge and background.. But there's something about taking old ideas, taking the 1% that I feel I would do to my car and making the rest up so I can stand there with grazed and cut knuckles, oil raining off my face and at least say that there is something that nobody has done.. However I do appreciate that the reason nobody has done it, might be because it's a stupid and crap idea :wink:

I like alot of the older stuff, soon im gonna be learning how to do lead loading, and hopefully brass floating. Propper oldskool bodywork, and 20x's better than filler imo

 

i also like mixing oldskool with new school, like my throttle bodies, they were designed for mechanical injcetion, and im going to modify (all reversable mind!) them to run electronic injection 8)

 

 

 

but me and me dad also have diffrent opinions about lots of things, like me engine, ive just been collecting bits, and lots of high spec parts have turned up, i think its the the round ones :mrgreen: he thinks i should stick with a 38dgas and a fast road cam

 

Also i think the car needs a - 6 inch drop. he thinks -2 is alot :mrgreen:
