Hi!

Bit of a long story but when i first got my car i serviced it and went to change the gearbox oil as it was a bit 'crunchy'. Turns out it didnt actually have any oil in and the previous owner had run it like this for quite a while. I put some oil in and it all leaked out again where the prop goes into it. I put a new seal in but to no joy. I then decided id take it out to get it rebuilt. Got it back with all new bushes/seals etc and it still leaked!

I then got a brand new single piece prop from GS escorts and thought while i was changing the prop id try a new seal incase the old prop had nackered it. After running it for a day its started to leak again. Can anyone help as ive even taken it to a garage and they dont even know whats up with it?

Any help much appreciated!

Cheers

if i got a gearbox serviced and new seals and it still leaked id take it back or ask for a refund

wheres it leaking from

is it the seal where the prop goes in??

is it leaking from the inner part of the seal(the inner lip that the prop touches) OR the outer lip of the seal that the gearbox casing touches?

i have seen them before where the old seals have been butchered out and the gearbox case gets scored thus causing a leak

i had the same problem with myn first i tought it was the seal than i find out that the gearbox tail had a very deep but fine scratch. so i changed the oil seal again but befor i put the new one i done a bit of sealer. and that was it stil good till after 2 years

Ah i could be that then. Ill check the gearbox itself. Its leaking where the prop goes in by the way.

If it is that, what can i seal it with?

Thanks for your help!

Did you lube the seal with a bit of grease before putting the prop back, It dosent take seconds to rip the edge off a dry seal.

There is a thing you dont mention here, the slip yoke on the prop, take it out and look for damage, dents, rust, or wear, wear will obviously allow oil past if its bad enough, dents and rust damage will/can damage the lip,

Check the seal numbers, they should be cast into the outer edge of the seal, and measure the OD of the slider, then cross refference the seal number on Google, Im just wondering if there wrong seal is fitted, you can sometimes get different seal sizes for the same outside dia from a good bearing shop if that is the problem.

Failing that, is there any lift in the tailshaft? could indicate a bearing probem, Cant remember if Type 9s have a teflon bush inside to support the slider, if you have run dry, it is posible you have damaged the bearing,[if it has one]

While the car is safely up in the air, check to see if the tailshaft is bent with the prop off, by putting the car in 4th, disconnect the coil, and get somebody to turn the engine over on the key while watching the tailshaft for run-out.

Could be he box came out of a wrecked car or banger racer so it could quite easily be banana shaped

Had same problems after having my box rebuilt, went and bought new seal from Fords, went to take the old one out and it all but fell out! put new one in problem solved. Many years ago I worked for Borg Warner experimental garage in Letchworth and we had a load of problems with Avenger oil seals, turned out we had had a huge batch of seals with no wire spring inside worth a look just roll the outer lip back and check! Still Having problems with this after putting yet another seal in (3rd one!) Ive checked the box is straight and the lip of the box where the seal goes in. Is it right that oil should run out when you take the prop out. Should there be an internal seal somewhere as it seems a very hit or miss way of sealing a moving part?

I think the prop runs on a bush in the tailshaft of the gearbox , if this bush is worn then there would be too much movement for the seal to cope with so would leak even with a new seal ? worth checkin for play in the bush , just an idea .

I think it is but cant be 100% sure to be honest? Which way should it go? Ive got it the way it shows in the pic below. With the side facing away from the bush to the outside of the gearbox. (hope that makes sense)
