Daveyboy20 Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 Getting fed up of this, my Cortina is by far the least reliable car i've ever owned. Went to stoke the other day to hand an essay in, car running like a dream really smooth actually not to bad on the fuel and nice and warm inside with the new thermostat in place. Came back home yesterday got within 5 minutes of the end of the motorway and i lose all power - not even the jumpy thing it was doing it just lost all power and i coasted into the hardshoulder. It was King raining and pitch black so me and kate are shivering on the hard shoulder while i piss about with thhe sodding thing. Cleaned inside dizzy which is what i thought it would be but it wasnt. Flattened the battery i was trying to start it for so long, called my mate out to tow us home in the end with his landcruiser. Just hooked it up to another car, changed the rotor arm and dizzy cap and it just wouldnt start. Im so pissed off with it completely flat im completely skint and ii have no idea whats wrong with it. I need to drive right dsown the other end of the country in a week. Makes me feel like i shouldnt have sold the starlet.. AND I STEPPED IN DOG SHIT ON THE WAY IN.

Daveyboy20 Posted January 10, 2007 Author Report Posted January 10, 2007 Yep its still sparking, every now and then it tries to fire once as in 'turnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturn - bumph - 'turnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnurnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturnturn -bumph - Ive replace the coil and leads and dizzy cap and cleaned the carb out with a whole can of carb cleaner. The jets arent blocked as theres now a nice spray of fuel when the throttle is pressed. What other cars have u got that you could use My capri is in the garage full of holes, truck is on the drive and has no engine, theres my mums celica in the garden with absolutely no compression and an mot which ran out in '02 and my mums hyundia with a fooked up gearbox oil pissing engine no brakes and etc...etc... Im pretty lost really, i thought it'd be fine getting the cortina coz the capri was reliable it only breaked when i really abused it and it was my fault, whereas the cortina ive been really gentle to and looked after and it keeps letting me down. Pintos are simple engines why so many confusing problems with this one? its not even high mileage

There should be a nice strong constant flow of fuel, is sounds like it is a fuel problem to me. Logigally an engine needs 4 things in order to run: 1.spark 2.air 3.compression 4.fuel My Anglia had a funny turn the other day, turned out to be a stuck float in the carb & the fuel pump valves were stuck open. I had to flush the pump out as some muck was sucked up from the tank. This to was a case of it trying to start but wouldn't! Have you tried pouring a small amount of fuel directly down the carb to see if it will run???? Worth a try mate, but if you have a spark, the only other thing I can think of doing is checking your gaps i.e plugs and points!!! Best of luck mate

MightySprocket Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 could be fuel, a blockage maybe, it's worth checking the engine earth strap, not sure where they are on a 'tina' might be on the gearbox to body or block to body, im sure its nothing major and you'll be smilling again when it's done mate

Its so much fun when it works and i get loads of enjoyment out of it, the problem is i need to use it everyday and i need to get across the country with it a lot with uni and stuff and its just been a right pain. I just havent got the money to see it as a challenge, i just see it as a complete pain start uni again soon (really dont want to) and it needs to be working well by then. Cant afford decent breakdown cover either, or a phone, so it really does need to work well!

Daveyboy20 Posted January 10, 2007 Author Report Posted January 10, 2007 Well, whilst on the hard shoulder with some police lookin in the bonnet and me assuring them - through a smile - that it will 'fire up in a sec' i was muttering something like 'if you dont f'ing start im gonna scrap you, you absolute peice of ......' "Sounds like its run out of petrol mate" was the useful comment of the younger cop (although to be fair he was a really nice guy and they gave us little yellow log flume pacamacs to wait in). Ive tried both the threats and the smiles and they aint worked!! Gonna charge the battery over night hopefully and then try again tomorrow.

I know what you mean mate, I have never seen a fuel filter totally full, they normally stay about half full (or are they half empty???) Anyway, I would say from that, that your pump seems to be pumping, but it sounds like the fuel is backing up down the pipe. This could mean your float is jammed or even incorrectly set, so it wont let any fuel, or not enough into the carb. I would take the carb off and strip it down, then you know you have definatley eliminated it!!! Best of luck mate

Daveyboy20 Posted January 10, 2007 Author Report Posted January 10, 2007 Ive got a perfect carb the same as it - 32/36 dgav - with only 20 000 miles put through it but it has a different choke, its a water one as opposed to a manual. how hard would it be to stick that on? i wanted to do it when i first got it but realised it has the different choke. flyingbanana sent me a file to help me overhaul one but obviously i need the car so need to stick the new carb on somehow.
Mark2Mark Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 I've just fitted the same carb to my anglia mate the choke was a peice of p!ss just chop one of the heater pipes and connect them to the outlets on the carb job done
