I popped the Burman steering box cover on my 1968 Mk II, no chips, burrs or anything wayward except for the washer that slides up and down with gear movement, it's split in half.

This washer is .850 outside diameter, .370 inside and .210 thick. It appears to be a hardened steel. There aren't many Mk II Cortinas in scrap yards here, where can I find a new replacement?

new ford parts centre sell recon boxes so they may be able to help with a new steering box if they dont have just the washer plus its the same box as a HilIman Hunter if that helps

Thanks guys, but remember I come from a land barren of 'Tinas. I pulled the old one out and measured it, also did a hardness test. It's Rc 58 - 60. Drill bits are that hard!

I'm a machinist but don't have the heat treating ability to make one that hard. If anyone has a dead box around and wants to send me this washer, I'll pay shipping +. Or if you know where I can buy a new replacement please, please hook me up with a link.

Dead in the water until then.

I have a piece of S156 steel here which I could post you a bit of.

It's not much harder than mild steel to machine but it's aircraft spec gear steel so it will case harden up to 60hrc. I can give you the contact details of a hardening company but it might be expensive for one part as they have a minimum order charge of £50 I think.
