kms Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 After changing the engine in the Cortina last week we had a few good days of driving out of it then it all went wrong! We went back to our engine man as he just wanted to get the carb working properly - it took a little while but we came up with a compromise of enough fuel to power effectively with limited freezing of carb. So we took it out went for some good thrashes and just when we needed it most to upset the vauxhall crew - it went cough, cough, splutter, cough. We had a look and put it down to carb freezing - we new would have to take the engine out at some point because it needed rings. It wasn't the Carb freezing. A bolt had come out of the carb and dropped down mashing itself up somewhere in the engine - we didn't realise. So last night we put the old engine back in - with a milder cam, the 4 branch, lightened flywheel / clutch, and the 3 ltr carb. As much as I liked the massive power it's nice to go back to something a little tamer - we can now drift without going a million miles an hour! Analysis of damage done to lairy engine - Kev stripped it yesterday - the bolt was still stuck in the carb, the washer has vanished but isn't why it stopped - the rings were that bad in it, that plug 1 & 4 stopped working through burning too much oil. The Washer has only marked the top of the third piston - minimum damage caused - phew
Daveyboy20 Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 Doh.. What cortina is it? What engine did you put in/have you put back? Im having cortina engine problems at the moment myself
kms Posted January 11, 2007 Author Report Posted January 11, 2007 I put a post up last week - it's a mk 5 tina - we sourced a 2.1 pinto - with a holbay cam for race engines, block had been decked - pistons sticking out of the valves - distributer was tweeked, 3ltr carb - 4 branch manifold, flywheel, clutch etc. It came out of a special grass hot rod thing - the cam was far too much for road use, it ideally liked to be revved between 5500 and 8000rpm And we broke it But he is going to re-build the engine and put a slightly milder cam in - but for the minute I'm happy enjoying the 2 ltr pinto with only slight mods
Daveyboy20 Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 Cool, i missed the post, mines a mk5 2 but its a 1.6 and its doin me head in! Ive got a 2.1 pinto in me capri thats in the garage and in bits - i keep thinking i might just put that in instead! Its only on a standard carb though but its still pretty rapid and sounds good it has a mild cam i think its a bit burbly at low revs and screams up on high! its in my sig. Good luck with your engine mate
