Lukey Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Broke my original 3.9 diff last week, fitted a 3.54 rs diff and my prop flange to it, all went in fine but its making like a constant grinding noise when in motion, its not a drone like a bearings gone tho, any ideas what causes this, have i done the flange nut up too tight? any help would be appreciated Cheers Luke
escort21 Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Who the hell does a burnout backwards anyway??
442 Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 just reversed up and axle "jumped" prob did damage. burnout was forwards about 35 foot , thats what happens when you got plenty of torque!!!!!
Toby Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 If you have, you'll need to replace the crush tube which is a bit involved. The diff should turn over freely and smoothly by hand. There is supposed to be a small amount of drag in the oil seal and bearings. Do you know if the diff was a good one prior to you getting your grubby mits on it?

It was a bit of an unknown mate, it was free moving out the car but noisey, i assumed it was dry and would quieten with the oil going thru it. i've sourced a 3.75 is this any good? basically i'm after better top end so i can happlily cruise at 75/80 on motorways, my original 3.9 revved high at this speed
NeilT Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 the 3.7 on my 1600 pinto capri cruses nicely on the motorway at about 80 its around 3000 RPM
dave waudby Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 the crush washer should be set/torqued properly and have the correct back lash id be carefull if youve just swapped flanges and nipped/tightened it up
Toby Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 A 3.7 will certainly have longer legs but will drop your acceleration back a bit. Longer legs sounds like what you're after though. Oh for a leggy blonde......
samurai Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I got a new full diff bearing/washer kit if you want to rebuild your diff. 60 pounds and its yours. PM me
Lukey Posted August 22, 2010 Author Report Posted August 22, 2010 I got a new full diff bearing/washer kit if you want to rebuild your diff. 60 pounds and its yours. PM me is it something i can do myself? do you need to press them in or anything?
Toby Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 Given how expensive diffs are these days it probably not worth the risk of fudging one up - get someone who knows what they're doing if I were you - you need a few special tools.

Lukey Posted August 24, 2010 Author Report Posted August 24, 2010 Cheers guys, advice taken. Prob going to source a decent 3.5 or 3.7, either will improve drivability greatly. keep you all posted
