Mk 1 Helen Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 My escort just failed it's MOT due to corrosion of inner strut mountings, my usual garage won't do the welding because they said it woud be better for it to go to a specialist (The garage are ace by the way & have helped me out on numerous occassions over many years) The car needs the inner strut top mountings cutting away & new ones welding in- the outer struts look fine as they have been replaced before I got it. Anyway parts cost £72 but labour is £480- with VAT that makes £648!! Is that about right? I know they'll do a good job as the bloke used to race escorts years ago & works on alot of classics but it seems alot of money.. what do u think? I am now going to learn to weld but not before the retest is due!?
GJUK Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 it's a bitch of a job to be fair, shocks off, and then try to get to it under the wing, if not, wing off... So that does seem okay for a price. Though it's a lot of moneh.
mk1estate Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 that is a lot of money, but it is a bitch of a job to do. Try shopping around and get some other quotes but make sure that they know what they are doing
Essexboy Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Sound quite expensive, just had a lot of welding done and bodywork at Retro Restos in Shepperton (South London), its a shame its a bit far or they would do you proud! You would get a great price too, work is A1 standard! If you want there number you can get Martin on 07846 019944 for a rough quote, if its cheap enough might be worth gettin the car down there!
dave waudby Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 i dont think it seems too bad a price they are also using welding wire gas etc and it will take time to do shop around if youre not happy
Mk 1 Helen Posted August 20, 2010 Author Report Posted August 20, 2010 thanks everyone! Think I'm going to go with it even though it means the new wheels I'd planned will have to wait- worth getting it done properly rather than a bodge job- nothing is too good for my OSF!
hotrodhains Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 like ur attitude hopefully not too long after, u can get ur wheels
Mk 1 Helen Posted August 29, 2010 Author Report Posted August 29, 2010 it is done! The old struts were like bits of paper so it's a good job I got it sorted, MOT re-test Tuesday................
