stuartp Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 A few little rust bubbles have appeared on the front edge of my bonnet and the front edge of both wings (car was properly painted about 3 years ago). I have been to one or two body repair places and they are talking about cutting chunks out and welding in new metal, then of course they say the whole bonnet needs painting again, wings too. Quoting many hundreds to do it obviously. I'm not all that knowledgable on the subject but surely a few little rust bubbles can be rubbed down to bare metal, treated and then painted? I can understand the bonnet and wings should be painted again fully so it doesn't show any joins but I don't understand why it needs new metal, it can't be that drastic can it?
FBF Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 they will probably rub back treat and fill but charge you for new metal...
SebringRS Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Rub it down yourself, see how far it goes Then treat it, and send it in to them to fill and repaint it
fezza Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Cant see how they can quote for cutting and welding until they have rubbed/ground back the affected area to see whats under there unless they can see the rust coming through from the other side Im certainly no body repair expert but i would have thought if its just surface rust and the panel is not holed then rubbing down, rust treating and maybe a skim of filler ??
banarama Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 filler is not for rust.its for dents/and filling over the repaired area that has been welded and ground back to blend in you can grind it and fill then paint.but the bubbles will soon be back.regards to that lead it.mr leadfoot on here will be able to give you some advice.
Tom Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 The best if not only way to get rid of rust is to cut it out and replace it. Sanding and treating it is just a temporary repair. Trust me, If you're going to get it done, get it done properly

stuartp Posted July 19, 2011 Author Report Posted July 19, 2011 I guess if I really should get it cut out to do the job properly it wouldn't hurt to rub it down myself now to have a look and also to stop it spreading. Cheers
