fezza Posted February 19, 2012 Report Posted February 19, 2012 Right then,im having some issues with my front end,ive just changed my steering rack and column to mk2 escort stuff,it was fitted with mk1 escort items,i have mk1 capri 3ltr struts on the car which the old rod ends fitted but the problem im now faced with is the mk2 track rod ends wont fit the steering arms and im a bit lost now,i thought about getting some rs steering arms(if they fit these struts?) but they're quite expensive and thought maybe i could just buy some track rod ends instead if someone knows the correct combination Help please
Tall paul Posted February 19, 2012 Report Posted February 19, 2012 Are the track rod ends to big or to small for the struts? When I put Capri legs on my mk2 my original tre's were to big so I had to get RS ones to go on my standard rack, I only paid £30 from eBay for a brand new pair. Hope this helps
Admin Vista Posted February 19, 2012 Admin Report Posted February 19, 2012 Track rod ends and steering arms are a minefield as there are a number of different combinations of threads and tapers that make things complicated if you've got modified or a mismatch of parts on the car. If you have a mk2 steering rack, you need track rod ends with a metric thread, M12 I think. If you have mk2 RS struts, or capri struts with bolt on steering arms you need mk2 RS track rod ends to get the right combination of taper and thread. If however the 3.0 capri struts have different steering arms that need a different taper, then you need to find the right taper for those arms combined with a metric thread for your steering rack. Mk2 Escort non RS TRE's perhaps? They have a larger taper. If think (emphasise think) all capri steering racks have an imperial thread so mk2 Escort your best bet to try first.
fezza Posted February 19, 2012 Author Report Posted February 19, 2012 I have a standard mk2 rack with standard track rod ends and the thread appears to be too big to fit through the steering arms,i think the steering arms are also mk1 capri 3ltr items so from what you guys are saying it seems i need the RS track rod ends which have a narrower thread to cure this problem, does this sound right Cheers chaps
