Where have others mounted their 4 point rear harness mounts in a mk1 escort?

Thanks,

There are suitable holes in the parcel shelf that I used for mine. You just need some 7/16 nuts for the eyelets. Its good as it keeps the belts horizontal but Ideally the area should be reinforced. Guess its too late for that now. Other people loop it round the rollcage.

Alright mate :)

Cheers for the reply.

I would not think the parcel shelf is that strong, I'm happy to drill holes through the rear floor and use nuts with huge washers (the proper seat belt captive nut things) under the shell.

Just wondering where others drilled and put them...

It's not strong enough really buy I decided it was ok for road use. There is a cross member at the bottom of where the rear seat goes that would be good to mount on.

i was told harnesses should not be mounted to the rear seat points because of the angle of the belt would be nearly 45deg angle and they should only be about 5deg off level officially.

i had mine on the rear seats but have now fitted to the rear shelf with the big nuts with backplates on the.

hope this helps

I'm not sure where they should be now...

That parcel shelf area is not very strong, where have others put them?

Thanks,

the MSA state that from 45 degrees to 10 degrees above vertical is acceptable for seat belt mountings. here is the link to the blue book,

http://www.msauk.org/site/cms/contentvi ... ticle=1122

its in the section

150-186 common regulations for competitors(safety)(k)

Then on page 180 there is a diagram Drawing number 39,

hope this helps some, mine went between the rear seats , i dont think the parcel shelf is strong enough but when i rebuild the car i will probably connect to the roll cage.

Thanks.

I've seen these being made by a guy on another forum.

Looks like the way forward.

Does anyone know if you can get them 'off the shelf' anywhere?

Cheers,

The top of the parcel shelf is better than the ones that people put in the sheet steel of the rear floor, thats the same thickness as the firewall top shelf.. but, the top shelf is in shear, not tension, like the 45'degree between the seat mounts are.

Yes there is original seatbelt mounts there, but the are for original seat belts, and not designed to take the loads of a 45'deg belt.

With a backing plate, the top shelf is fine, and also cross the belts over, this stops them slipping of your shoulders (Posse, have you done yours yet)

If you use a plate in the top shelf .. place it under the shelf, and dont fully weld it in, tack it in, 4 dots on teh corners is all you need. If you weld it all the way round and have a shunt, the metal will tear along the weld line and acctually be weaker than the 4 spotted plate.

The Harness Bar is a good alternitive, Made By Jon Betts,JB Fabrication, we spoke about doing thses some time ago, and came up with various designs .. the goal post loops stop the belts from sliding when crossed over.

If you see anyone with Harness's going straight down behind their seats, cut them for me, the belts not the owners, it more dangerous than having no belts at all..
