Mexico Jon Posted July 28, 2012 Report Posted July 28, 2012 Hi Everyone Need advice on the above, best stuff to use etc. Had a look at SebringRS Mk1 Daily and he has done a amazing job, trying to get my car to the same standard. So any advice would be graetly received. Thanks in advance. Cheers Jon
SebringRS Posted July 28, 2012 Report Posted July 28, 2012 I used that Dodo juice wax, expensive, and to be honest I think I get a better result out of the cheaper Meguiars wax, all depends how much you wanna spend, I've been told the best stuff is Autoglym HD wax, but that's really expensive and the Dodo Juice is £8 for a small sample pot I tend to now, wax my car once a month and keep it clean with quick detailer for the rest of the time between Usually is only arches I have to do, only do the whole thing if it's really bad Then proper wash for shows
SebringRS Posted July 28, 2012 Report Posted July 28, 2012 To do it properly you should wash, clay, correct, then wax But depends how shiny you want it This is washed and clayed, didnt bother correcting as it was fresh paint (about 2 months) Claying gets rid of any other wax' and contaminants, it gives the wax a better surface to cling to You'd only need to correct if you have any tiny scratches, that gets rid of them, better reflection as the surface is flat, but you can probably get away with just, wash, clay, then wax Then tart up the trim and windows etc
Mexico Jon Posted July 29, 2012 Author Report Posted July 29, 2012 That's great SebringRS. That's 1 shiney car!! Cheers again Jon
deltamal Posted July 29, 2012 Report Posted July 29, 2012 Guessing that that the clay is a fine rubbing compound?
SebringRS Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 This is what clay does Its like a rubbery type thing, usually you use it with some form of lubrication, like quick detailer, usually with it, and the clay just picks up any dirt you can't see and oil, grease etc If you run your hand over the paint surface before clay you'll feel like a grit type feel too it, after clay the paint will be smooth
GT Tonry Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Use plenty of detailer on your panel before you use the clay as clay on a dry panel can destroy a car. Also do one panel at a time and dry off excess detailer with a microfibre cloth as you go along after using the clay bar.Demon shine is a cheap alternative to some of the more expensive detailers and does the same job.
SebringRS Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 And before i forget, if you think clay is a bit risky for you, i use this as I can never really get on with the clay http://www.ebay.com/itm/TURTLE-WAX-LIQU ... 500wt_1156 Its a liquid clay bar, so is sort of self lubricated, i tend to wash my car, then use this while its still wet then rinse off as i go along, still works as good i think and saves you having to worry about lubricating the clay and is alot quicker
tazrocks88 Posted August 5, 2012 Report Posted August 5, 2012 i really wouldnt advise using clay unless you a) have the time and have alot of patience because if u do it wrong it can be worse than when u started! if you give a car a good wash and have a good used car polish it is often better than using clay anyway the only real reason for using it is embeded dirt and fallout! if you want to treat a car to make a good wax base i often use a high soap car cleaner first with a detailers coarse sponge then use a soft mitt then leather it thoroughly then apply a used car polish without silicon then wax or even auto glym life shine followed by the wax if you can get some as its a brilliant product can be expensive but its brilliant specially on a black car its what we use at work and we have had no complaints and we are regularly cleaning R8's and the likes as i work for audi and they charge alot for the privilege!
john_3.0s Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 never heard so much bufty boy talk in all my life
D-FENS Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 My mk2 cortina has shitty old paintwork and deserves a good clean up .I washed it today even though it was to hot to do a realy good job .The paint is metallic and is going flat and has a lot of streak marks in it from the water drying quickly in the sun .I could pay someone who knows what there doing to machine polish it but would be willing to give it a hand job if it would be worth it price wise .I read a few reviews on the Turtlewax liquid clay bar and quite a few people said real clay bar gives much better results so might get a set,bar and detailer .So you wash the car first then clay bar it ,can you use polish next and leave it at that or should you always finish with wax for a proper job .
tazrocks88 Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 if you have polished a car it is enough it is just that wax has no cut but is a better longer lasting protection and finish as a general rule! but if your paint is that bad i would advise using a finishing compound on it before you polish it etc as it would get rid of alot of the flatness as its a metalic paint! hope that helps
D-FENS Posted August 15, 2012 Report Posted August 15, 2012 Taz can you recommend any particular finishing compounds that you have used ?
JOHN SAVAGE Posted August 16, 2012 Report Posted August 16, 2012 if you want basic information on cleaning, polishing and waxing, meguiars have a free app you can bung on your phone which has videos on when and how to do stuff
