My son in law has just purchased an 08 Zafira ( diesel ) . If you do 3 miles it smells,exhaust ticks as its far too hot and smoke from under the car... Any ideas ??

It's a filter in the exhaust , diesel particulate filter . The get blocked with soot and need to do a regeneration to clear them , this usually involves driving at high rpm for a long period of time . They have to get to a high temperature to regenerate approx 600 degrees . There are additives that enable the burn temperature to be lower about 300 degrees or you can do a forced regeneration with diagnostic equipment , technically speaking they are swank !
