When it was brought to my attention that this type of car has been stolen, it made common sense to go public with a photograph of the vehicle and some rough details regarding the car. The classic car world is a small one, with the historic rally cars being even smaller. If a vehicle is stolen it is of course in both the owners and the Insurers company interest to recover the car, my aim was to recover the vehicle or search out as much information as I could.

I cannot thank you guys enough for your efforts in identifying relevant details on both photos of the cars, I am pretty sure most of you will have an educated guess over what I suspect has happened here. However it is reassuring that the Ford community has come together to help root out a growing problem, and of course help convict those responsible.

I've been following this for a few days both on TS and RSE and though it's clear something dodgy is going on, I'm confused as to what and who by. Does the owner of MPY still have it in his possession? And if so was YWE created electronically by photoshopping the number plates onto it and claiming for a non existent car? Or a car that existed only as a V5C? In which case how come both cars are shown as taxed and by association must therefore be MOT'd?

At a guess here's how the scam (if that's what it is) may have worked let's say YWE21T is the actual car and MPY568P is a set of tags and logbook bought from ebay, the original MPY568P being scrapped years ago. Two guys at different address's but within a reasonable distance from each other (100 mile radius) work together they buy YWE21T and the tags/logbook from ebay for MPY568P. They insure both (at seperate addresses in different names with different companies). They grind off or weld over the chassis number on the inner wing. Then Man A takes YWE21T to a local test station for a MOT then gets a tax disc for it. Then they change the tags & number plates over from YWE21T to MPY568P. Man B then takes it for an MOT in his area and gets a tax disc for it. MPY568P is then stored at Man B's garage. YWE21T is reported stolen from Man A's garage (after they damage the door and break some windows). MPY568P then appears for sale as a genuine car. So they get the insurance pay out for YWE21T and they get MPY568P to sell on. The person who buys MPY568P loses £26,995 (if the scam is discovered) as does the insurance company (who then increase our premiums). Then in afew years the tags/logbook for YWE21T will end up on ebay and the whole process starts again.

So thats why most genuine people on car forums don't want to see log books and tags sold. But unfortunately there seems a fair few people who just don't get it.

Im scared now as i bought a fully welded shell with obviously no tags or chassis numbers on the car as most panels have been replaced? The person on the log book has had it in his name for approx 1 year???? The last owner had the car for a lot longer than that. I have got an old tax disc from the 90's with the original reg on it but that is about it? I have tried an online reg check but it has come up with nothing as probably due to the car being from late 60's?

How can i ensure im not buying a ringer and there are 2 the same reg numbers out there?

How can i ensure that i identify the car with numbers once i have completed the build so no one else can steel it and continue this shi77y circle?

The engine i am putting in it has a legitamate engine from a bumped car so i will contact DVLA and give that number on the log book. I would be devastated turning up at a gathering and seeing my reg on another car, sickly, hangover feeling you get when you step off a small curb or step when you dont expect it type feeling!!!!

All advice would help?

And Relax!!!!! I just checked it out and it still on SORn and the dates match the ones i had it Sorn from? Any ideas how i can stamp up the chassis and get hold of a replica or original Vin plate as it has had a full front and slam panel?

Liam
