Tucker Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 I have a MK2 escort which has being modified as much as I would like to take it, its a road car with a x-flow (140bhp) suspension, brakes, gearbox have all been uprated. The only weak link in the chain is the rear axle and diff which is completely standard, as I said dont want to go mad but was toying with the idea of doing something with the back end and, or fitting a LSD. Just wanted to get peoples thoughts and experiences as it would be a fair chunk of money. Many thanks
Fiesta Steve Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 140 hp Crossflow ??!! You need an LSD !!
willsy Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Imo get a proper old skool slipper , not an ATB. Got 18 spline Tran x shafts and lsd in mine
Tucker Posted March 6, 2013 Author Report Posted March 6, 2013 Thanks for the replys. Any ideas on what to go for, type/ ratios. Upgraded halfshafts needed? I havn't got silly power just want to improve handling and make it a bit stronger, and idealy keep the cost down
puddy Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 Thanks for the replys. Any ideas on what to go for, type/ ratios. Upgraded halfshafts needed? I havn't got silly power just want to improve handling and make it a bit stronger, and idealy keep the cost down Assuming its a cammy screamer (140bhp x flow) ,I would have thought you would need at least 4.1 rear gear, although if you are on 175/50s and intend to do some mileage, a 3.89 or even a 3.77 might be more sensible. I have a tran-x slipper in the back of my mk1 tina on a 4.1 with 175/50's and its very low geared ,although my x flow is considerably less tuned than your one. Standard shafts should be fine,I've never broken one,not even behind a turbo yb. I also fitted a panhard rod to my rear end with decent rear shox and some de cambered single leaf springs, and it handles very nicely just make sure you get the nose angle of the diff about level. puddy
welshmike Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 Got a tran-x LSD in mine, best money ive ever spent on the car If your happy with your gearing as is then just put an LSD centre in the diff and leave shafts/cwp alone. But deffo get a slipper, youl love it
James HPE Motorsport Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 Plate type LSD is a must with 140bhp Your standard shafts will be fine unless you are planning to do some trackdays/Santa podding, then you should think about upgrading!!! 3J are the new kids on the block and their products are second to none!!! What's more, they will setup the diff for your application before they send it out!!! If you are interested, give me a shout as I am a supplier of 3J products and I can get you some good discount on any of their range!!!
rallyesport04 Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 got to be a plate slipper for me much more fun an made the car easier control an more predicatable i had a tran x unit (now owned by quaife) i had similar bhp to you with a type 9 3.89 diff wanted to go 4.1 as 4.4 was too low diff i had 185/60/13 toyo r888 tyres the only time i had drive shaft an diff issues was being to aggresive off the line at pod lots of grip an torque breaks things on the road i had no issues at all
Tucker Posted March 7, 2013 Author Report Posted March 7, 2013 Thanks guys,That gives me a good idea of what to go for. Its a road car, so 3.89 LSD, and keep the standard shafts I think. Best get saving now lol
