mk2 mike Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 I'm going to need a garage built to put the Escort in when I move to the GF's in the next 6-12 months. Been looking at a few options but I don't have bottomless pockets so cost is a major factor although id like a brick or breeze block building rather than wood or steel. The garden it's going in is long and thin, and my plan is to have a double length garage (normal width) with electrics (fluro light and a socket for vacuum etc) on a concrete base where soil is at the moment. A second hand up and over door with a single access door on the rear into the garden. Anyone self built recently who can give me a rough ballpark figure? Anyone know of a builder in the Sevenoaks area who can give a quote? Are there any other options that you guys can recommend? Cheers Mike.
Savvi Posted April 22, 2013 Report Posted April 22, 2013 I built a double garage out of double width thermo blocks rendered inside and out with a tiles roof about 15 years ago, cost me just over £5k ............... think id be looking at more 315-20k now 1
katana Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 If money is tight i'd look at a concrete panel system - you can put the base down -150mm of concrete over same of hardcore. Either company erect or good DIY can, usuallyhave metal truss roof which gets covered in metal cladding. Worth considering but theyare more Austin 1100 than Escort Twin Cam! Edit : Just had a quite check on some costs - 18'6" x 10'6" with an apex style roof is about £2500 + base (say £750 -1000) And as they are modular - double length = double money - easy! 1
popeye Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 concrete slab !! you may want to think about insulation under the floor, at least 100mm thick. and screed on top.... if you are going for the brick / block type.. insulate the walls. wooden type is best for the UK.. weather mostly cold / damp and wood will breath better than brick / block . but cost will be the key.. mine is timber with clear corrugated perspex roof...when the suns out or just a bright day it keeps warm.. in the winter months it sits in a Hamilton Cair-o-Port.. with a couple 4' long green house electric heaters.... works for me 1
Posse Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 I have built loads mike like gary says 100mm celtex in the floor 80mm screed . Deffo 100mm blocks with a rendered finished with a nice flat roof GRP system ( fiber glass ) job done . 1
morcheen Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 or do the concrete base and put a wooden shed up and insulate that inside and board over.could do it all yourself to keep costs down.easy to extend if needed in the future just doing something similar for my brother 24' x22' shed. 1
aardvark101 Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Would you need planning for a solid garage of large proportion ?
mk2 mike Posted April 23, 2013 Author Report Posted April 23, 2013 Would you need planning for a solid garage of large proportion ? I got told by the local council that as long as its within 35meters of the outside wall of the property there are no regulations on size. If its beyond 35m then there are restrictions on what can and can't be built.
theloudboy Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 A guy at work bought a pre-built wooden shed but its massive all he done was lay a concrete pad a follow the instutions, you leaving us then mike and moving down sarf.
Barnwest Posted April 29, 2013 Report Posted April 29, 2013 I got a block double built just after Christmas, 5.5m x 5.45m, 3m to ridge. Thick reinforced slab, single skin block with pillars, 100mm insulation on the roof then those tin sheets that look like tiles, still got to render it, the windows and doors were free, and it stands me just under £6k. I was going to go for wood but the welding and grinding wouldnt agree with it! 1
mk1estate Posted May 1, 2013 Report Posted May 1, 2013 i bought a second hand prefab concrete garage, ok i didnt use all the panels as i needed it as a large shed rather than a garage but it only cost me £50 from the local papers. I had loads of timber left over which i resold for £35 so it only cost me £15. Been there for around 6-7 years and still great, only problem is you have trouble trying to fix shelfs etc as the concrete panels dont drill that well lol 1
Barnwest Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Ive got a concrete prefab one next to the built one, the intention was to take it down once the new one was up, problem is I have filled them both now!
