I have been renting a garage in stoke on trent for over 2 years to store my Cortina as ive been in and out of the country and not be able to continue the project.

I go to pick up the car today and the garage block and flats look very different. Turns out the properties have been sold on and in the process my car has been removed. My key still works in the lock but the garage has someone elses property in it!

I know im going to get plenty of I told you so comments about not touching a car for so long. I know at this point im very unlikely to get it back but I wanted to ask the question. If its been legitimately purchased then I'd prefer to pass on the keys and significant amount of history to the new owner and then ill chase up the property owners to get back the money they received for it when they sold it. If its just sat, unloved, in a yard somewhere then I would very much like it back!

So its a mk2 Cortina 1300 deluxe in black, originally blue.

Have you not got a phone number for the person you were renting the garage from?

Either that or find out who now owns the flats/garages & find out if they know what's happened to it?

Or, leave a note with a phone number attached to the garage door to see if the person who's now using it can tell you anything?

I was renting it from the caudwell group, big company and all above board with an agreement signed etc. Im sure I will get some rent money back, but its so odd for a car just to be disposed of like that. Ill speak with all the garage owner tomorrow and im sure will find out more.

You need to be getting the details of who else they've given a key to so you can start trying to track your car down that way. I think I'd want the value of the vehicle from them too!

Well ive tracked down the person who has received the rent and they will be refunding all of this to me, so financially I am not at a loss now.

Just need to find out what happened to the car now!

escortmad79, I saw this picture also. It's the one used in the ebay listing when I very first bought the car.

The V5 number I have is no longer valid with the DVLA which means another V5 has been applied for. I'll get on to the DVLA with a V888 form and see who the new keeper is.

Well the V5 I have is to an old address, but a family friend lives there still and I would have thought they would forward any post for me to me. They tell me they cant remember the last time any post came for me.

Why is it no longer valid ?

I've had a Minor tucked away for 20 years and the V5 is still valid on that, although when I moved house a couple of years ago I did a change of address.

If similar had happened to that I would have gone direct to Police.

If someone applies for a new V5 without the new keepers slip then the DVLA send a letter to the current keeper asking them if they object. If they say don't send a letter back with an objection then they will issue a new V5 to a new keeper and send out a fine to the old keeper for failure to notify a change of keeper.

So the car has been in the custody of another person for about 2 years, who also has a legitimate V5 for it, and I have no paperwork and no way of proving I ever owned or own the car. Speaking with an ex-chief constable earlier he said there was literally no point pursuing it with the police!

If you are a previous registered keeper then you have proof the car was yours as your name will be on DVLA records. I would continue pursuing this as the new owner possessing the V5C is not proof that he has legal title to it.

How did the garage end up being rented to someone else if you were still paying rent on it?
