pnwrs2000 Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 Hi, I want a snap off steering wheel for my mk2 escort. The type I want is a springalex but I'm not sure how snap off wheels work - can you get any wheel to be a snap off wheel by using a certain boss or can only certain wheels be used as snap off ones ? Also, what do they look like ? Cheers
steved35 Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 I got a boss of a guy on turbosport works really good no play in it which I herd snap on have my son has one in his as well I'll post some pictures if u like
pnwrs2000 Posted March 30, 2014 Author Report Posted March 30, 2014 Ooo yes please. Sorry, didn't realise "snap off" was a brand name - I'm just after a springalex type of steering wheel that I can take off for security. Cheers
katana Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 As a security measure it may stop the opportunist but if someone is watching the car, they can work out what you have and come equipped if they want it that badly - a wheel and a boss @ £100 to get a £5000 car isn't much to pay for them!

Yeah I know, my thinking was that every little helps. Besides, I'm going to get a springalex type wheel anyway
welshmike Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 is the springalex style wheel you are thinking of from Rally Design? if so, be aware that they dont fit a normal 6 bolt boss like most wheels use, not without some modification anyway. Secondly, i would not recomend these steering wheels. I had one on my Capri, always loved the deep dish look of them and it was a must have when i was building it, but they flex, a lot. I got used to this and was concious not to stress it too much, but after 4 months it broke; luckily i was only pulling out of a junction and not hamering the local B roads but having the rim seperate off the spokes still gave a bit of a brown trouser moment! Ive had lots of other bits from Rally Design before and after that happened which i have been very pleased with but those wheels are dangerous imo, especially on our old cars with no powersteering. Moral of the story, dont skrimp and buy quality.

I hadn't really started looking at where to buy one from yet to be honest, although I have just been flicking through Classic Ford mag and noticed that Burton's are now doing them. Hadnt thought about crap quality actually but certainly don't want the rim coming off in my hands !!!!!

With that argument there's no point in even trying to do anything ever. In fact I may as well park it on the street, leave the keys in it and put a sign on the roof saying "Pinch me I'm free of security measures"
steved35 Posted April 5, 2014 Report Posted April 5, 2014 No welding fits straight on the column and the steering wheel so it's not to close to you
pnwrs2000 Posted April 5, 2014 Author Report Posted April 5, 2014 Cheers steved35. Looks alright that. What wheel is it you've got ?
Herr Doktor Posted April 6, 2014 Report Posted April 6, 2014 What make is it? I've tried to read it and it looks like "elevs" but a Google search of the aforementioned returns no results.

Cars go from locked garages with other cars parked in front of them! If a determined thief wants your car they'll get it! That was the point of my post!
Herr Doktor Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 "Elevo ballax" brings back interesting results from Google, none relevant. "Elevo ballax steering wheel boss" returns no records, as does most configurations of the term.. Eventually I was able to find something but only through bulk orders from Thailand of 50 or more. Anyone fancy a group buy?
steved35 Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 The guy lives in Thailand but his brother lives here I think he has a mk1 I'm sure there on eBay 1
M11rf Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 I am the guy that sells the normal and removable boss kit for the Mk1 and Mk2 Escort. I will be re-listing on ebay at the end of this week, or you can PM me. Mark. 1
blower Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 One of the best things I bought for the car ,
5tox Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 The only potential problem i see is that a springalex steering wheel is already very deep, if you add a snap off boss kit that will bring the already deep steering wheel even closer. I'd love one of those snap off boss kits, but im jumping the gun a bit as the cars nowhere near completion, I beleive Mark (M11rf) also seels a selection of steering wheels
