bazoff72 Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 hI , I have a couple of questions please. to achieve a top speed of lets say 115mph with a 2.0l Pinto engine that has twin 45s and a type 9 5 speed gear box ,what kind of horse power would i be looking for ? can anyone give me some examples please. i,e 130 bhp = ??mph 150 bhp =?? mph i am trying to get my engine rebuilt and have about £1000 budget. i have a company in mind but i was just wondering what spec to ask for .? can anyone help please. i know there is a formula to calculate bhp - mph but actually its a bit mind boggling . so i was just wondering if anyone could give me some rough estimates/examples cheers
over_head_cam Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 Bhp doesn't really have that much bearing on mph.. Gearing is far more important. Even size/weight can be overcome eventually. 1
HotRodMatt Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 We've had 120mph out of my Mk1 with a 2ltr Pinto, Type9, and 3.89 diff with 185/60/13 tyres. Just over 5k rpm if I remember right... maybe even 5500rpm and it was still pulling. Dynoed at 120 rwhp. There are so many factors involved with going fast (air resistance, tyre tread friction, road surface friction, inertia, etc) that I doubt you'd be able to accurately calculate a figure for a given power. Cheers Matt 1
bazoff72 Posted April 9, 2014 Author Report Posted April 9, 2014 thanks guys that helps alot, i guess i should be looking for around the 150 rwhp mark with 45s and the right diff then, type 9 5 speed box. thank you.
skeeter Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 Like the others have already said, you cant work it out that simply. I think I would find a reputable builder and tell them what performance you want to get out of it and let them tell you what spec you need and what this will cost. The old adage rings true - it isn't how fast you want to go, it is how fast you can afford to go. S 2
Danish Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 The old adage rings true - it isn't how fast you want to go, it is how fast you can afford to go. Or my favourite "fast / cheap / reliable" ... pick two! 1
Fiesta Steve Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 To pull big mph you need big bhp. It's always a sure fire way at the pod to see who's got horse power. regardless of the time, a high terminal speed indicates high bhp. But there are so many variables there is no calculation to simply work it out. 1
buzzard Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 ive been pushing for 100mph over the line for years . turbo pinto . 97 mph is the fastest ive done . ive tried lighter parts , more power (200 bhp+) but for me , whats against me is air . LOL 1
BigBubba Posted April 14, 2014 Report Posted April 14, 2014 My old RS was geared to do 140mph, and used to sit behind my mates Prodrive Catalunya Impreza all day long. That was a 2.1 with 45s and a 3.7 slipper. Pretty much balls out with 3 angle valve seats, huge valves, wire ringed block etc, was dyno proven at just under 180hp, but had loads of torque too. 115mph should be easily achievable. Decent spec around 150 at the flywheel and a 3.9 or 4.1 diff should do the trick. If you can find an old RS tuning guide - the Ford one, online, it has a wee graph showing final drive ratio, revs and speed.
