Hi all

Went to look at a 2 door mark 1 tonight with a red top conversion. Nice chap, but the car was way lower than my expectations!I

It was up for just shy of 11k. In the brief walk-around with my bro we noticed the following.

Rear end panel repair, rear qtr replacement out of line, crack in bodywork where the windscreen pillar meets the scuttle. Runs in paint. Rusty door jambs, patchwork underneath, dodgy sills, fibreglass type 49 rear arches with the original still underneath, tatty interior, runs and filler evident in paintwork in multiple areas, ill fitting doors, rust apparent looking up under dash, angle iron engine mounts. The list goes on....

(and on)

Do I need to increase my budget for a nice mk1 or 2 escort or is this what I should expect for the money these days?

Thoughts please

Yes mate, it was.

Owner was a really nice guy, the car had some nice bits, but it was just a wrong-un in my opinion.

If you want to know a bit more PM me.

Your budget is realistic but not for concours !

Your will find a good mk1 or mk2 for that but one with lots of work done,or maybe look for one of SA escort mk2 sports and use the rest of budget to make your own stamp

Nah it was an F plate.

It looked pretty from a distance.

I wasn't expecting perfect, but I was a bit shocked by some of the workmanship on the car.

The current owner had made sensible mods. But to be honest, the state of the shell scared me a little.

And as for 200bhp. My work hack Cooper S R53 would embarrass it. I'd place it at a 7k car IMHO.

Having already owned genuine mk1 and Mk2 RS2000's, 2.8 Capri's etc. I kinda have an understanding of what to expect.

That wasn't it. But it was low, loud and Ford.

Respect to That

I've been looking about as a mate of mine was after another escort .....  I just cant believe some of the prices at present, I was offered a early 2 door not long ago for £5k needing building up but it was really solid with rear turrets and some decent mods all in paint and he had everything to build it ........ im wondering if I should ring him and see if he still has it at the rate they are going up I think it could be a good investment !!!

Based on how my search is going I reckon (although not an expert) it would be a good buy.

If the shells good, the rest is just nuts and bolts. If you've got the time.... they're not exactly the most complicated vehicles in the world are they. If I can't get what I want I may have to go down that road.

The workshop is getting a lick of paint just in case!

I did.

The write up sounds good.

Might be a shame if I owned it.

I'd ditch the engine, change the interior, lob a nice set of wheels on it etc, etc, etc.

But the colour...... Sandstone. It just put me right off. I suppose within my budget I could get it resprayed.

I love the colour Mike Sullivan has sprayed his OMG.

Anyone know what a proper spray job costs these days?

Haven't done that to a car in 20 years!

I like the colour , and Isn't that what your supposed to do buy a car and pay to change everything !!!! I got mine from these guys . You need to be careful with SA cars as they are better shells than uk but our SA brothers use the blue peter approach to repairs . Washing up bottles and sticky back plastic !!!!!

It's well within your budget to change it how you want it .............. I had a Mk2 that colour didn't like it at 1st but then got used to it, also not many others that colour as everyone has painted them !!!!

Looks a good starting point thou

Nudged the budget up a little and bought a car today.

200 mile trip home and it went without a hitch.

Well happy with her so far.

Previous keeper was sound, so it made for a great day out!

Yeah I saw the white one. I think it looks nice with the black stripes.

It was listed on eBay for sale in Somerset a couple of weeks ago and now it's moved up to Hull?

I'm not going to miss trawling the internet 24/7 for a car, that's for sure!
