dalmarshall Posted May 18, 2014 Report Posted May 18, 2014 Took the old girl out today for a bit of bonding, first time ive had it out for a decent drive due to its 21 years off the road. So with new tyres and a working temperature gauge I gave her a run. The diff (or something from the back end) is grumbling like hell. She lets out a lovely puff of smoke if you give it a bootful, and if you park up you have to disconnect the battery as something is draining it faster than you can say 'jumpleads'....................I love it!! Bit more work to do but we're getting on alright.......................oh, and ive noticed im calling it 'she'..........whats that all about!! 2

Dal, connect your multimeter up to the battery on milli amps as seen in the pic below. This can also be done on the positive cable. Look at how much current is being pulled on the display and just start pulling individual fuses, one at a time. When the current drain stops, then you have pulled a fuse on the right circuit to help narrow it down. If it's still there after pulling all the fuses, then the suspect component has a direct feed off the battery and is probably not fused. If you don't have a multimeter, another indication of a parasitic drain with the ignition switched off is when you connect the negative lead to the battery you get a very slight spark. This tells you that something is pulling a current too. You can do a similar exercise with the fuses by doing this with the battery negative terminal, but not recommended if the car is fitted with an ECU, as you could possibly spike it. 2
SmokeEm Posted May 19, 2014 Report Posted May 19, 2014 ^^^^ Great bit of basic straightforward advice right there 1
