Vista
I just realised, the wheels I borrowed for the MOT are like the ones on the March page of my OSF calendar. Does anyone know what wheel nuts I need? Coz the ones I bought are too narrow for the holes in the wheels! It was so disappointing... You have 7.5j RS 4 spokes on a mk1? That's a tall order at the best of times. Are you sure that's what you have? Have a look at this thread and download the PDF in the first post and see if you can identify your wheels. http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/ipb/index.php?/topic/64169-identifying-your-rs-alloys/ If you have 4 spokes, they will be one of two types of nut you need, either taper nuts, like these, if you have Capri laser 4 spokes http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Wheel-Nut-Set-Ford-Escort-Capri-Cortina-Mk1-Mk2-Rs2000-Rally-7-16-UNF-Thread-/331486898897?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d2e28aad1 Or collar / washer nuts like these if you have RS 4 spokes http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-ESCORT-MK1-7-16-UNF-WHEEL-NUTS-RS-ALLOY-AVO-RS2000-MEXICO-RS1600-/251802472341?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3aa098cf95

Lizzy
I think I have the Capri Laser type here. It does feel like I need taper seat wheel nuts when I feel inside the holes. That's why I got ones with conical ends. But they weren't wide enough. I can see now that it's the moving conical washer that makes them wide enough. PeteRS8084
They do require the tapered type nuts, anything else will just flap about. Pete
Lizzy
I had a look on eBay and there's loads of different kinds of tapered ones, and I don't know which ones to get!!
Vista
I had a look on eBay and there's loads of different kinds of tapered ones, and I don't know which ones to get!! The ones in the first link I posted? Though you do need to make sure you have imperial threads on your wheel studs first. A UK mk1 will have 7/16" UNF studs but assuming your LHD on is European built, it might be different and have M12 threads
Lizzy
I have double checked, and the wheels I have are definitely Capri Laser RS alloys, and the wheel studs on my Escort are 7/16 UNF. The wheel nuts you first posted were unsold and have been relisted as item 331493989343. The wheel nuts I have are listed as item 280533675468. (They are the ones that are too narrow for the wheel holes.) The question is: are these two sets of wheel nuts definitely different?
PeteRS8084
I have laser alloys on my mk2 at the moment, and I am pretty sure that they have a 60 degree taper, obviously I have metric studs though. Hope this helps. Pete
Vista
They look like the right nuts (the ones you have). The problem could be that they're bottoming out before they tighten down on the wheel, i.e. the end of the inside of the nut is tightening on the end of the stud before the taper tightens on the wheel. Before doing anything else, measure how much stud you have protruding against how deep the nut is and see if that's your issue.
khanlad
I changed the studs on my mk2 to longer ones when i got it because the orginal ones didnt look long enough, only a couple of theads into the bolt, had a wheel come off my old mk1 because of it, dont know what you have know but might be worth thinking about doing both at the same time ?

Lizzy
Thanks for the tip Jay! I will give him a call. And thanks to Kahn also - defo don't fancy wheels falling off! My studs are well long though... Just as a matter of interest, I've been loaned a wheel nut to try out, just out of a mate's spare bits pile. No idea what Ford it's off, but it fits really nicely. It's tapered, like the ones I bought, only wider, and has a hole right through. If I could identify it, and buy some more just like it, I'd be laughing... khanlad
They look like the ones i use with my 4 spokes, the fat open end one, wheel falling off ! We laugh about it now! Got the wheel back from in the field! Jacked it up, nut from other three wheels and off we went!! Young! Fearless, and stupid! As apose to now, old fearless and stupid! Ok not quite as fearless!!

PeteRS8084
On the picture of your nuts, still makes me laugh, I use the open ended smaller ones with the wider bottoms .........that makes me smile too.........how childish! Pete

Lizzy
I'm well excited. Hopefully right wheel nuts on their way now, rear shackle pin bushes and brake calliper being fitted Sunday, sparky visiting on Monday, and new 4-branch manifold being fitted (with free-flow stainless exhaust!!! ) on Tuesday - my MOT will soon be in sight! Lizzy
I've discovered that the reason I'm having trouble getting wiper blades to fit is because someone's put new wiper arms on, using some random bolts. They're too long and too wide at the ends. I have found what I think is one of the original wipers lurking at the back of the passenger side shelf - just the one - and it's shorter, with the same hook at the end, but slimmer. I've been looking at Mk1 Escort wiper arms on eBay and they don't have a hook at the end, so now I'm really confused. Does anyone know whether it's OK to get one without a hook please? Any advice would be gratefully received. Here is the wiper I found in my car (x3) and the ones I'm wondering about buying:
Lizzy
'It's a 7/16" UNF open taper nut with a 60 degree taper' I bought a set of these, and they are the same size (width) as the ones I already had Does anyone want them?? On the bright side, I have since got the right ones from Speed Shack. Speed Shack works with a manufacturer who makes them specially, using a machine to add the extra width. I would highly recommend this supplier!

Lizzy
I can't return them - I promised I wouldn't as he said his profit margin is so low he would make a loss if he had to absorb the cost of posting them to me. We talked for ages on the phone and he measured them whilst on the phone to me and they sounded fine. (But not...) So yeah, a bit awkward. :/
