Hi guys, I know this has probably been covered elsewhere but I'm struggling to find a concise answer to my questions.

Essentially my 72 mk3 cortina has a 2.0 litre pinto and type 9 gearbox fitted and I'm looking to swap the pinto out for a 2.9ltr V6.

I've found that I can buy rusty donor Scorpios for not allot of money so was considering just buying one to take all the parts from but I wanted to check a few things first.

What do I do about gearboxes? I notice most of the 2.9 scorpios are autos which I'm quite happy with (I'd kind of prefer an automatic) but would the autobox bolt right in or would the car require modifications? I currently have a type 9 manual box which i assume would need different bell housing to mate with the V6 where I to stay manual?

What age donor 2.9 should I be looking for? I see there were many variants and it was manufactured for a long time!

Finally Parts wise, Besides a complete engine with wiring and ECU is there anything else I'm going to need or be aware of?

Thanks guys

Tim

I'm running carbed 2.8 in mine.

So I do know that the box you have will be no good as the input shaft on the type9 v6 box is about 3cm longer.

I had an ex-Granada A4LD auto box in my Mk3 for a while, we had to modify the gearlever hole and use a different cross-member, but it was OK.

You'll need the V6 engine mounts - from a 2.3 Mk5. Quite hard to get hold of these days.

Also the cologne type-9 is different to the pinto type-9 - different bell-housing and different length input shaft.

Thanks guys, would a 2.8 carb engine be a better one to source? I like the simplicity of carbs!

Thanks for clearing up the gearbox question! I will make sure i get something complete with box!

This is my install, the engine has been tweaked a bit, it uses a V6 type 9 box as fitted to the 2.8 Capri's, 2.3 Cortina engine mounts and DTA ecu (optional), the rest of the install is plumbing, I was using a taxi rad but a 2'8 rad will do, the diff is a 3.09 for cruising as I do a lot of motorway trips but a 3.75 if you want a bit more get up and go! very happy with the engine! any quiries I will try and help,

What car was your engine out of?

The 2.9 engine is better, for one it has proper exhaust ports. My friend has one in her XR4x4 and is planning to change it to carb, so I guess it's possible.

My Super Rod friends use 2.9 and modify the 2.8 inlet manifold to fit so they can run twin choke weber.

The Type 9 V6 variant is different as is the bellhousing.

Don't forget the MT75 gearbox as the V6 variant has Bellhousing built in, it is a bit wider though and may need tunnel persuading

The engine was from a Mk3 Granada Limo, one of my mate's used to run a funeral parlor, I bought it with 3 months tax and mot for £300! 80,000 miles but it was rurty took what I wanted and sold the scrap for £125....

Ha! Nice! I take it the gearbox from the original engine was no good in the mk3?

No it was an autobox, no good on a fun car! its around 172 brake at the wheels, at the moment!

Do you suppose it would have fitted without tunnel modification should you have chosen to keep it? I see there are many more autobox scorpios about and I do like a cruiser!

The autobox would have made it too cumbersome and soaked up power, the axle has a 3.09 diff, and is 5 linked with panhard rod, coilovers and Fostec half shafts, not that that set up is needed for this conversion but it was what I was using when it was fitted with a 2.4 YB Cossie, over 300 brake wirh the NOS, stopped it tramping and goes round corner's! with the 5 speed box and 3.09 diff it is a good motorway cruiser, not sure about auto box fitment as it was never in the game plan.

I have a std 2.9 with 4sp auto in my P100. Also running a Capri 3.09:1 rear axle. Like Malcy says,it wont be lightning off the line but should still cruise nicely. In total contrast, power was the last thing on my agenda, more cruising speed economy along with NOISE. (Straight though system!)
